file recovery for dummy's . . .

Duh! Long story short. New Vista installation, Vista pukes and takes WP docs with it and backups are also FUBAR. Tried "free" recovery tool, but they seem worthless.
I have the old HD from my XP machine that has the info I need.
What do I need to purchase to use the old HD as a externally connected HD by USB or Fire wire? Any other suggestions?

an operating system doesn't just "destroy" everything on the hard drive. if it "took everything with it", then congrats, your hard drive just crashed.

You don't really *need* anything to do what you want though. stick both HD's into the machine and go. Aside from that, you can get any one of a dozen different kinds of 3.5" external usb enclosures easily available at newegg (or even BB, etc)
