File freezing problem

I have a problem with the files on my hdd's. When I try to do anything other then opening the file on Windows Explorer, it freezes for about 10-15 seconds. For example, when I right-click the file, or do a cut/copy/delete with keyboard, the Windows Explorer freezes and it comes back after 10-15 seconds and performs my command.

I have two Maxtor hdd's and I'm having this problem with files on both hdd's.

What could possibly cause this?

I'm using Windows XP SP1 with latest updates.

I'll search for spyware but what's the resources tab?
 
Use Ad Aware or Spybot S&D.

That behavior is typical when some application is having issues. Word is really bad about that.

Run CHKDSK on the drives to make sure the file system and such are okay.

Do you have networked connections? If Explorer can't initially find a network resource, it will continue to try for some period of time (a minute?) until it gives up.

Check your cables and make sure the drives are properly connected.

Also, I have seen this behavior with drives that are failing. Are the drives reporting S.M.A.R.T. failures during boot up?
Are the drives very hot to the touch? Hotter than usual drives are another sign of problems.

When was the last time you ran a defrag? It's probably not the main cause, but if it has been a while, it is a contributing cause.

Do you have a f-ton of programs in your task bar? If you do, chances are you are low on available mem and everything you do is being written to virtual mem (fragmented hard drive makes this worse).

Go to run - type MSCONFIG and goto the startup tab. Un-check everything your comp doesn't need to run. If your confused about what something is, google it.

Otherwise, Spybot or Ad-aware. Chances are you have tons of known pieces of sheit on your computer that is slowing it down.

XP has no resource issues regarding task bar. The behavior is consistant with unauthorized prcessess such as spyware or worse, something viral. IT is also consistant with bad power affecting the system memory functions. I would consider that possibility as well

Excuse me...

I meant to say System tray not task bar.

How many items are in the system tray.

That will most definately impact the performance of a pc.

I was just being passive aggressive because I was rightfuly corrected on a more serious issue in another thread ;)
 
I've found the reason. It's Norton Antivirus 2003. When I install it the problems starts to occur and when I uninstall it the problem goes away. I searched the web and it seems you have to disable LiveUpdate to get rid of it.
