File cannot be defragmented??

I recently downloaded a 1.2gig movie file onto my old pc, which has a 10gig HD. I can play the file but it isn't smooth, it stops and starts. If i try to defragment the HD i can see there are two large blocks of fragmented data, and when defragmentation is finished it tells me that blahblahblah.avi could not be defragmented. What's going on?
 
I think a choppy playback is probably related to a slow PC or hard disk, not that it's fragmented.

You don't find it odd that the file can't be defragmented, even in safe mode?
 
I'm going to have to vote for a slow hard drive as well. Not sure what udma levels those old 10 gigs had, but make sure you at least have dma enabled for the drive. If you have another hard drive, you could move that file over, defrag the 10 gig drive, then move it back. That way it should be pretty much unfragmented.
