File backup software?

Not really sure where this belongs, so I figured here is a good start.

I am trying to find some backup software for the domain that I run, but am having a hard time finding exactly what I want. I recently migrated my department's (I am a student in said department) computers to an active directory domain. They have had a windows server 2k3 box for better than a year now, but it has been used for pretty much nothing, other than some poorly setup filesharing.

I fixed that, and now there are about 20 computers in the domain, and every user has their own folder. The goal is to have everyone put the files that they work on each day into this folder, but telling these people to do that daily is apparently just too damn hard. I have tried the windows "backup" feature that is built in, but its not exactly what is wanted. Besides the security of the backups, we also want all the files out of their work folders to be copied to the server each night, so that when the people in charge need to quickly pull up a grant record, it is available.

Now I suppose I could setup everyone to work off the server, but some of these people are litterally computer illiterate other than knowing how to do the few specific tasks they have to do each day. I just don't trust them to not screw it up somehow. The university is also awesome at breaking the network all the time, and then I would get blamed for downtime.

So, does anybody have any reccomendations for a program that I can have run everynight which will move specific folders from each user's computer to that user's folder on the server each night? A lot of what I have found is for backup up entire computers, but that relaly isnt needed here. I have images and ghost, if a computer completely crashes it would be faster to just reimage and then pull the files needed back off the server.

Actually I was looking at retrospect earlier while at work, but didn't look too closely since their products page is a pain to navigate. Anyone ever used the server version? I am looking for something with a small client that connects to the server, rathar than the other way around.

I am trying to around having to share the files at both ends, that just creates a big problem. (Unless of course I can give the program domain admin rights, and then it can just remotely access each computer).

Well, I have answered my own question. Apparently the single server version of the program allows for unlimited clients, and you just install the client on each computer.

This is exactly what I need. Thanks

That's exactly what happens.

The main package runs on a server (if you have the server version) and a small client is installed on the workstations.

You script it to run however you want, and it connects to the client machines and does the backup over the network.

I have the Pro version, which runs on my main desktop. It also comes with two client licenses, and my desktop and two main laptops are are backed up to a volume on my Server Raid-5 every night at 3am.

I understand the whole backup software portion of your post, but your situation sounds like an absolutely prime candidate for Folder Redirection.

You're all ready in a domain
You're on the right path to manage everything through policies in general

I would kill for a setup like that...a nice, small plate to organize and fix.
