File Backup Methods? Raid 5 1.2TB

Hey all,

I'm currently setting up a fileserver which consists of 5 300GB Sata Drives in a Raid 5 array. What backup methods do you use in order to backup this much data? Backup to Dvd's would just take too long, and would be a PITA since I add new data daily. Setting up another (identical) fileserver for data replication would just be too costy. And I'm pretty sure that tape drives/ libraries + tapes aren't cheap.

So am I stuck with building another identical fileserver for replication? Or purchasing a tape drive /library?

What backup methods do you guys use?

Well, I'm not backing up 1.2TB, but I did recently backup about 240 GB to single layer DVDs.
I usually just have another hard drive to backup on and then I unplug it. but I've had it in the comp for awhile just because I didn't organize & needed more space.

I think you're stuck with choosing between tapes & another fileserver. I don't know of any other backup methods.

But dual-layer dvds would be nice & cheap. for a one-time thing. grab 3 dvd burners, and start churning.
 
Option 1: Second set of HDDs that are offline most of the time
Option 2: You only select the data that you "really need" and cannot recover via other means and back that up to DVD/ HDD etc.
Option 3: Tape drive.
 
Except for using a second set of drives (dont have to be in raid), that you backup periodically to and keep offline otherwise, the only other practical thing for that much data is tapes. Until Bluray/hd-dvd come out anyway.
 
Well for work I just ordered a AIT-4 autoloader.. A whole mess of tapes and some cleaning tapes.

Sometimes that is just what you have to do, bite the bullet and get the expensive stuff.

make sure you will actually be able to back up that amount of data in your time window too. (takes time to run the backup)
