Driving my pair of Denon D2K's this Fiio combo is just lethal. As many have said the E7 is fairly neutral in tone which is what I was looking for so I can adjust the software EQ in MediaMonkey 4 & FB2K as needed.

I can't recommend this combo enough, if your on the fence....jump immediately.

yes...your not going to get the "details" when gaming that you would w/ EAX enabled card, but I think it sounds damned good and is more than functional for my needs/taste.
 
Do new games still use EAX? I never see EAX options in sound menus for games anymore (only volume controls and maybe a stereo/headphone/5.1 selector) - so does EAX matter or is all of the processing for sound done somewhere within the game's software before it ever gets out to the card/dac?

Not many. Since Windows Vista and 7 do all software sound processing, the market for EAX/EFX and that kind of shit has really died down. Plus Creative was the only one who ever really fully supported it in hardware (because it is their standard). Combine that with powerful multi-core processors and most games are just electing to do software processing.

You still do see it though occasionally. Mostly OpenAL titles. Mass Effect uses it for sure, and if you don't have hardware OpenAL you don't get surround sound. I'm almost certain Mass Effect 2 does as well. DDO also uses it last I checked.

Mostly is a legacy gaming thing, older titles use it a lot more often.
 
I just purchased this combo a few weeks ago myself from mp4nation after a lot of research and uncertainty of what route to go.

Very pleased with the results with my ATH-AD700's and ATH-M50 headphones, and the fact that you can take the E7 along with you for portable use if you so choose is great. Such a versatile setup.
