Current:
e2160
2gigs DDR 800
150 raptor x2 (Not in raid)
4850

I built this machine in mid '08 from a P4 and 6800GT. Was a nice little bump. But now I am really, really hurting for a boost. I keep going back and forth between picking up another 2 gigs, and a used Q9 or Q6, or selling some parts and starting up an i5 build.

So, which one of these options is the best.

1. Selling my e2160, Ram, Mobo and buying the required i5 parts.
or
2. Selling the e2160, throwing in a used Q9 or Q6, and an extra 2 gigs

Money isn't really an issue. However, spending less now, would mean my next build can be that much better. Nah mean playa?

1) What will you be doing with this PC? Gaming? Photoshop? Web browsing? etc
A few VM's (Server 2003, XP, W7). Everquest 2. TF2.
2) What's your budget? Are tax and shipping included?
Whatever I don't spend now, will be spent a bit later on another complete build.
3) Where do you live?
Houston, Tx
4) What exact parts do you need for that budget? CPU, RAM, case, etc. Please be very specific.
All depends, hence my previous post.
5) If reusing any parts, what parts will you be reusing? Please be especially specific about the power supply. List make and model.
All depends, hence my previous post. However, guarantee reused parts: 2x 150 raptors, 1x WD 160, OCZ 500w (Will get model tonight).
6) Will you be overclocking?
Nope
7) What size monitor do you have and/or plan to have?
20in 16x9
8) When do you plan on building/buying the PC?
Whenever I can muster up the stones to actually buy the parts.
9) What features do you need in a motherboard? RAID? Firewire? Crossfire or SLI support? etc.
None
10) Do you already have a legit and reusable/transferable OS key/license? If yes, what OS? 32bit or 64bit? Yessir. W7 64.

Sell everything including the raptors.

Since you are dealing with vm's and you memory/cpu usage may become higher, you need to consider the 920. The 1366 socket will be getting 6 core Cpu's this year, and you can plan for that. You need a better power supply, and buy selling the two raptors you have now can move you into a ssd.

I'd stick with the Radeon HD 4850 video card for now. His Quad core CPU may give him a few fps increase in gaming. He can always wait and get a graphics card later if he decides to get into more serious gaming. 20" display 16x9? that must be 1600x900 resolution. The Radeon HD 4850 can still deliver, especially for the 2 games he listed.

All suggestions look great so far. And I am kind of leaning towards moving up to a Q6 or Q9 and some more ram. That will be a solid base for an upgrade to a ATI 57xx series a few months-year after that.

Argh! Hate this :D. For now, I think I will wait on a new build, for the Intel 6 core, and go balls out.

Thanks peoples!
