I am planning a fiber optic display but need somewhere to start. I am thinking about a matrix of leds that basically dances with music in a certain pattern. I then plan to connect (glue?) fibers to the ends of each led then set the open surface of each fiber in a grid pattern on the front of a custom enclosure.

Does anybody have any insight into this, its still totally on the drawing board and the idea is a bit rough.

Out at another site (bit-tech.net or virtualhideout.com I think) someone did a mod where they made "pinpoint" lights on the knob of a fanbus to indicate its position. Basically, they took an LED, drilled a hole into a couple of mm into the top of the LEDs lens, and glued a short length of fibre into it. It was VERY effective.

I want to say it by someone like mashie (mashie.org), but suspect it was one of the bit-tech folk.

yeah i rember that from a long time ago but cant rember who did it. I believe it was on bit tech as i never went to vh before. This would work perfectly for what you are trying to do. The only thing i have to say is DO NOT USE A POWER DRILL ;) . you will need a very small pin head hand drill. You can find them in hobby stores.

JEEVES

OK, it was www.bit-tech.net ... these guys have done (and documented) some very classy mods.

Pay particular attention to macroman. Go to the macrocase article for the information.

While there, for ANYONE doing mods, check out the bit-tech crews article archive for some inspiration. Two standout mods (personal opinion) are G-gnome's Orac3 project and macroman's other case, Macro Black from way back in 2001 (does this qualify as Old School? :D).

Unless you are coming up with something extrmely original a visit to this site will go to show that its all been done before.

sweet thanks for the info, bit-tech is a super awesome site with some very knowledgeable guys on their forums
