I just got a change on my order status from Dell:

This information is current as of Thursday, April 14, 2005 8:19 PM. If you feel that this information is out of date, please try clearing your browser cache and reloading the page.

Package Stage: In Transit

Status: In Transit to Local Carrier

It is quite a journey waiting 1 month for a purchase to ship (dual 2405s, dual 3.6 zeons, 2 G ram, 15K RPM SCSI drives, Quadro 4400 FX, etc.), especially when the price tag is over 7K...you anticipate getting the system in a week, but due to Dell's left hand not knowing what the right hand is doing, and not informing their customers about such ignorance, it turns out to be quite rewarding when the purchase finally ships...but you have to put in the pain before you get the gain...I don't recommend it.

Huh? What's with the Quadros? You best be doing some major 3d rendering with that package boy... along with dual sockets? You do know that quadros aren't good at gaming right?

So why such an expensive computer? And you ordered it from DELL? Or just the display? Huh?

I am a freelance 3D animator and don't do very much gaming (but this was only due to my current workstation's main purpose being for work, Windows 2000 and a Wildcat 4100 card, these were great for 3d apps, but terrible for games...oh well, but now I am planning on getting back into gaming a little bit). My experience with high-end workstations is if you can afford the $$ to buy like this, then I highly recommend...if not, then do the best you can and deal with the issues of home-made systems...I've done both. Dell gave me such a great deal on this computer...basically got the thing for $7,300 and some free $1K software b/c the order was delayed so long.

No, dual sockets, not needed, basically one monitor will be for the viewport, the other for video editing, composite work, toolbars, internet research...just low end stuff.

As far as rendering, yes, it will do rendering, but not anymore heavy (but faster time) than the other computers in my render farm...this is the best way to go, I have now 5 computers, with 7 processors in which to distribute rendering jobs....one more will help.

The reason I posted in this forum, is b/c the display was holding up the order, and I had been reading and writing regarding when others had recieved their 2405 orders, so I thought I'd just let everyone know of my immediate success, which is sort of indirectly related to the Display forum.

Thanks for the congrats...now comes the hard part of loading up all new software, and getting everything stable and learning new work arounds...this is part of the business....but I can't wait to see how that Quadro handles a poly count of over 1mil and higher...I've had some scene ideas, higher detailed models, lighting skills I've been developing, but unable to produce given my current limitations in hardware.

BTW, I didn't spend the money on this system...I have a client who I will be giving a discount to in order to offset the purchase...kind of nice, since I will still be making money and I just received a free 5 year upgrade for my entire business....maybe someone upstairs is looking out for me. ;)

i'd love to see some screenshots of some of your work if you have a website or something. especially once you get that screaming hardware up and going.

Yeah I'd like to see it too.
I've been a modelling/animator fan since I was a kid. And thus I also am a little obsessed with workstations/Maya/softimage :)
