So, i found my old FF7 Discs, but one of them is scratched beyond use, so I download a back up (legal since i own them) and for some reason i cant get it to work. Does it not work with XP or something, i haven't played that game since i had windows 98 lol. Any thoughts ?

It has all sorts of well-known compatability issues with XP and 2k (and likely Vista).

It should still run though... you'll just have issues with (different sets depending on OS) it crashing and not letting you proceed once you get past the golden saucer, or all the clip scenes being inverted, or...

Just find an old 4 gig drive or something and throw 98se on it. It's waaay easier than trying to get it to work right on a newer OS. (Trust me... been there, done that, eventually went the 98 install route)

I think they released an expansion of FF7 for the PC, or a diff version for XP / Vista. Download that :D I mean, like you said, you own the game, so no harm no foul.

FF7 was the greatest game of all time. I still have my PS1 version. Never played it on the PC tho.

Right now I'm playing Crisis Core on the PSP and I'm going to play FF7 again once I complete this. Might just ISO my FF7 PS1 disks and run them on the PSP instead of trying to get it to work on PC..

FF7 PC works fine on XP as long as you get the unofficial XP pack. The hi-res update aint shabby either.

yeah Mine froze with the XP pack after you steal the tiny bronco.

They also have a nice mod that does some AA on the game only seen pics never actually someone playing it.

Mine installs, then when i try and play it, it just goes to a black screen and thats it, it just sits there, and i have to reboot.

There was a patch a while back that improved the backwards compatability with XP, don't know where you'd find it now, the site I got it from went down over a year ago...

The compatability modes in XP for FF7 never worked properly for me, it would often come up with blocks and the screen wouldn't be totally rendered!

What i do and it works the best for me is download the xp patch and then play ff7 on a 480p capable tv. Since you cant use aa in ff7 and the max res is 640/480 its your best bet especially since the backgrounds are RE style and using the hi res patch causes them to look ass ugly imo.

i dont think you can do anything about the background being stretched.. but at least your characters looks good with AA :D

Did this last year and I'm still trying to get through it. Only just arriving at the Crater on Disk 2 now. I don't play too often though.

FF7 does work with Windows XP. I have it installed and have played it without any problems thanks to some patches. There is a site out there with different kids of patches for it but I forgot the name of it.

If you are looking for something to kind of help you out, look for the Ultima Edition. It has several tweaks and patches implemented into it to help you out with compatibility.

Best way to get it to work is to get the PS version and playit on epsxe it runs flawlessly

This is why FF7 Needs to be remade and released as a launch title for the PS4 and made for the PC as well (DX 10.1).

PS3 is old and the graphics are good but a remake of FF7 demands better than what the PS3 can offer. <3

I want the PC Version to "recommend" a 3GHz Quad Core Processor, 4GB of Ram, SLI'd Cards that support DX 10.1 and a Monitor that can do 1080p.

And even then, I want the game to crawl because it looks so fantastic.

FF VII is one of the top gaming experiences I've had. I would gladly pay several hundred dollars for a a graphically updated PS3 version of FF VII. And I ain't even rich, dude!

I dont own a PS3. And dont plan to.

UNLESS

They make a FF7 remake. Then I will gladly partake in the spendage of $ for one, as well as the Collectors edition of FF7

Why spend all that money when you can buy the PC version or PSX version and run it on an emulator. Graphics doesn't make a game great, gameplay does.

Anyone try it on vista and running the game in compatibility mode under windows 98?

While this is true, a game like FF7 is worthly of getting an update in looks.

Even when it came out it looked blah with is blocky characters etc. I know I know, PSX in 1997 was outstanding, but that was 11 years ago already.

The game deserves 2009 era graphics and good voice overs in the ENTIRE game like advent children.

For those people who obviously havn't played FF7, it IS simply the best RPG that ever was or ever will be. It had real plot twists, it did things that truely NO one saw coming, it took the genre whole new directions. A remake of FF7 would sale millions upon millions of copies of the game. That game was simply that good.

it should work with xp, there is an Nvidia riva TNT patch that you will need if you have nvidia card... this was available last i checked..

i still have original cd's if you want me to send the files to you... basically install cd1, and hten change something in registry that points to install directory, and you can copy all other cd's over there... all the other cd's just have movie files.

This game actually is worth buying a BS computer to play it on.
Im gonna price out how much it would cost to build one

I wonder if that is worth it to own a legacy computer like this....

I downloaded a patched FFVII a couple years ago since the originals didn't work on modern hardware/OSes anymore and it worked very well. The only problem I had was that AA caused some bad artifacts and the godawful midi music. Other than that, it worked great.

We could really use an FFVII remake about now...

I bought and returned a PS3 because I didn't like any games and I now have blu ray on my PC (for a heck of a lot less money). But I will definitely re-buy (and keep) PS3 if they release a faithful FF7 remake. Here's to wishin!

with a voodoo... F'N TIGHT!!!

i used to have all my pc save games as well at random points... i think i lost that backup long ago though :(

Be sure to buy the playstation-esque gamepad from walmart for 2.99 as well.

After reading this, I decide to bust out my old FFVII for the PC, it was seriously one the first games I bought after getting my own personal computer.(P90 with 16mb of SIMM ram) I could barely run it lol. I installed it on XP and downloaded the patch from download.com and it runs fine. I even found my old save files that I have backed up for years with my Ruby and Diamond fights (mmm Mime - Omnislash)
I don't get why use guys are having so much trouble. I recommend;

http://www.download.com/Final-Fanta...539_4-10122631.html?tag=lst-2&cdlPid=10122632

Just that use that, don't install any of the other crap that is out. Who cares if you can run it at higher resolution or with AA. Just play the game.
