k i just installed my 120GB WD and i just hav a few questions:

1. if i use this HD to store movies and mp3s could i eventually use it as a master drive in another system and still keep the data on it after installing an OS?

2. if 1 is true can i partition the HD and still keep all my data? or would that even b worth doing? im not sure if i get a performance increase if i have a partition for the OS/games and the rest for media files.
 
Hmm, interesting. Sadly, I'd have to say no. It's not the best way to install Windows. Guarantee of stability comes with a format which speaks for itself. Is it possible though? I think yes but it kind of would be complicated ( I think ). You can always save your media and format it and install Windows then just transfer back the media.

You cannot partition a hard drive that is *already* partitioned. If you partitioned a drive, what you are essentially doing is telling the machine to reserve the hard drive space for nothing else but for itself. You can't partition on an already reserved table. You'd need to format the hard drive and THEN you can set pre-sizes for your partitions.

As for performance increase, it would be neglectible due to the fact it is still being shared on one hard drive. Would it be more organized? Surely. But performance give or take can give varied results between worse or better. You'd have to defrag each partition more so often if you move files around. But then there's no point if you can just simply create a C:\WINDOWS (default), C:\PC Games folder and C:\Media Files folder. You can defrag all of them at once and be kept running at top notch.

wow thx. can i just install windows onto my slave drive then store data on it and later use it as my primary drive?
 
you can.. just make two active partitions on the hard drive FIRST and store everything onto the second. When you install windows xp, it will ask you to pick a partition, just make sure you select the 1st one.

Yes, that is exactly what I would do. I was going to suggest it but it looks like you figured it out ;)

You'll lose a little space initially, but it's the easiest, safest way to do what you want to do. Or you could just use it as your master right off.

It would really be better for him not to partition it and just store his data on it until he's ready to switch. That way he has a functioning OS already there without making a partition that he may not really want there in the end. He can accomplish his goal without it.
 
thx everyone. now i hav to format my drive. btw is it normal for my HD space to read 111GB when it is a 120GB HD?
