can you use ISA server as just a normal firewall for a lan, like without a active directory domain controller or do the clients connecting through the ISA server to the internet need to be on the domain with active directory accounts? basically run a small home network on a workgrpup but use the ISA server as nat and all that stuff?

and with small business server 2003 it comes with ISA server now what you want to do is run ISA server on its own machine so you would just install SBS server on the computer you want to use as the ISA server but then just configure it for ISA server and nothing else correct?

so you can still do everything based upon IP address instead of an AD user account?

Yes, however you will need to setup SBS as a domain controller and edit the default rules to allow internet access from unauthenticated users.

Yes
