I liked this quote but it did not mention tapping into your neighbors power.
The single slot nature of the card will in no doubt appeal to folders (who don't mind using an open test-bed), wishing to stick six or seven of them into a single motherboard with a couple of power supplies to boot.

I see a single box record of ppd with 7 of these in a SR-2 with 2x Hex cores OC-ed one notch shy of hades.
That's 100k+ ppd from the cards alone then add in the -bigadv points.

You would have to have a dedicated 15A (or maybe even 20A) line though....

....or living in Antarctica where you can deal with the heat. :D I can't imagine running several of those single slot cards on anything but an open bench or a case with the side panels removed.

You could do what I did when I was running 3x 9800GX2 cards on the same system.....

Box fan.

You build the system around a $20 box fan. It is amazing how many heat issues go away with this easy fix :cool:

Galaxy used to have a single-slot GTX260. So This seems kind of reasonable.
 
Box fans can moveable lot of air a lot more quiet than 120mm fans can

I was considering blowing all fans in one direction and using bathroom exaust fans to channel hot air out and cold air from the pantry in

As far as single slot goes. I have always wondered why no one has ever taken an after market cooler (Like this ThermalRight) and just bent it out straight. I have modified several heatpipe coolers bending the crap out of them, and I really dont see this being a big deal. It would require bench mounting, but should work well.
 
A single slot Fermi is going to be scary as hell. That said, if you get a few rigs together with 6-7 of these, it will probably get your house raided. The other concern is what to do with all of that heat, and it couldn't be very quiet either.

it would need a dedicated 20A line at the minimum.. you would be talking about almost if not more then 3000 watts out of a single system.. based on the numbers that [H] showed while running 2 cards in SLI on furmark which was 560ish watts for the entire system.. so if you figure an SR-2 with 2 high end overclocked processors your talking 300-350w just from the processors if not more then 200-250w per card.. lets say 250w x 7 cards thats 1750w just for the cards.. and then who of us wouldnt try to overclock all 7 cards :p because i sure as hell would try too..

It's possible, they did it before - but 480s run a hell of a lot hotter than a 260. :)
There ain't enough copper in the world to put in a single slot card and have it cool a 480 worth a crap. (especially with little to no heatpipes) :D I applaud their effort for form factor but I think the cooling efficiency will be severely lacking.

Good point to the other comment about Galaxy's single slot 260 being available...AT broke the news about it, I still haven't seem them for sale anywhere. (not like I'd buy one but I'm just saying)

There are low profile heatsinks out there. First there were the Arctic Cooling Acceleros, then the Thermalright T-Rad2 which has now been copied by Scythe and Prolimatech. Problem with those coolers is that they still take up a 2nd PCIe slot running passively; when you add a fan you're taking a 3rd slot. The Scythe comes with low profile fans, but it still probably takes up 2.5 PCIe slots, card PCB to top of fan.

I really *really* wish there were better options for SLi coolers. Most of them take up more room than what's available between the 2 cards (depending on the spacing on the motherboard), otherwise the topmost card's fan doesn't get much air. I'm happy with my SLi 260's, I wish I could get them to run cooler without spending an arm and a leg though. (cheapest would be roughly $100 for 2 air coolers; water would obviously be $300+ depending on what blocks, rad and pump you get)
 
the problem with the thermalright cooler is while sure it's nice.. ITS FUCKING HUGE!!! the pictures make it look way smaller then it is.. and if you have a motherboard that has an over sized northbridge or chipset heatsink like almost all boards do that run a nvidia chipset it barely fits since the heatsink has a double sided mount so that the heatsinks either below or above the card for SLI support..

even better if you mount a 20" allergen reduction filter on the back of it because you have almost no dust to clean out of the computer too.

OK that's one big card. I can't imagine air cooling this thing unless the cooler was a big version of the Arctic Cooling type coolers but it would weigh a ton!
Watercooling seems like the way to go with this monster.

If you can cram 3 of these into a rig on a test bench and then put a boxfan over top of it, cooling shouldn't be that much of an issue.

Whether we be a car or computer enthusiast, for some reason zip ties, box fans, duct tape, and so on seems to be a crutch we rely on far too much. No duct tape! It is just too cliche of an enthusiast gone mad. :p
