I need to learn more about VMware so I thought about building 2 ESXi host and use my older workstation as a Freenas storage (1.8Ghz Opteron, 4GB RAM). I know that it mostly comes down to RAM for VMware, so I plan to have 16GB RAM for each host. Would I be ok with going with i5-2400 instead of i7-2600 as this would save me money? I know this boils down to 4 core v. 8 cores (Hyperthreading). I also thought about going with Xeon 1245 (8 cores with HT) but I dont think I can run non ECC ram with it. ECC as we all know is pretty expensive compared to plain DDR3. Plus the motherboard I had in mind is kinda expensive as well (Asus P8B WS).
I think the Intel mobo I plan to go with should support all the feature for ESXi. I also plan on picking up some used Intel dual Gig port adapters from ebay to supplement and a gigabit switch
Here's what I am about to pull the trigger on (2 quantity each):-
1) Intel DQ67OWB3
2.) G.Skill 2 X 8GB modules
3.) i5-2400
4.) SILVERSTONE SUGO case
5.) CORSAIR Builder Series CX430 V2 power supply (Is this going to be enough?)
Please let me know on your thoughts. My plan is to learn more about the technology and eventually pursue VCP.
