Feds: We Will Search Your Laptop At The Border

Oh - sorry w1retap, I agree with your other comments, this topic as a whole just had be too upset and I replied to your post too hastily.

Though, I think the person you replied to with the "feel free to move out" comment shouldn't be judged to hastily - I think it's excusable to say something like that when you're in a fit of rage, which, we all SHOULD be when we read something like this.

If you're an American, and you hear about crap like this and you DONT get upset when you read about it, you should be tar'd and feather'd. If someone said shit like "feel free to move out" in real life as if they better than someone else, i'd probably have a fat person sit on them, then say "if you dont like it, leave". Maybe then they'd get the point

The reason I said feel free to move out is because most of the people that complain are the people that vote the commies into their positions. Take no offense to anything I say, lol.. I could care less. If something gets to the breaking point in this country where my Constitutional rights are actually being violated, I'll stand up. Right now I'm just not seeing it. The Constitution guarantees no right to privacy, especially concerning international flights or international border crossings. If this was domestic, that would be much different.

I for one welcome our new Fascist Overlords.

"your papers are not in order..."

Getting through Customs is painful enough as it is. This will just back up the lines even further. I'm sure they do racial profiling to pick out who they will harass, and I'm so sure a little ole grandma won't be picked for harassment (although I would use her to mule my stuff across the boarder).

no respect for us citizens 4th amendment? Big surprise they already infringe on our uninfringable right to keep and bear arms.

This made me think of something my dad sent me in email the other day:

FACTS TO PONDER:

Doctors:

  1. The number of physicians in the U.S. is: 700,000.
  2. Accidental deaths caused by Physicians per year are: 120,000.
  3. Accidental deaths per physician is: 0.171.

Statistics courtesy of U.S. Dept of Health Human Services.

Guns:

  1. The number of gun owners in the U.S. is: 80,000,000. (Yes, that's 80 million..)
  2. The number of accidental gun deaths per year, all age groups, is: 1,500.
  3. The number of accidental deaths per gun owner is: 0.000188.

Statistics courtesy of FBI

So, statistically, doctors are approximately 9,000 times more dangerous than gun owners.

Remember, Guns don't kill people, doctors do.

FACT: Not everyone has a gun, but almost everyone has at least one doctor.

Please alert your friends to this alarming threat. We must ban doctors before this gets completely out of hand!

:D

It's called the "Right of Admission", and pretty much every country has the right to allow or deny entry in to it's country, for any reason and without probable cause.

This has nothing to do with rights--you have the right to be thoroughly inspected before being allowed entry in to this country, or any other country you wish to enter. Being a U.S. Citizen doesn't give you the right to side-step any of this--once you leave the country, the country has the right to inspect you prior to allowing you admission in to the country.

not sure wtf they expect to find or are looking for in a file search.. Canadian customs asked me if I had any porn though... think the buggers wanted to copy it if I had any.
Can you blame them? I'm sure Canadian porn sucks. :p

sounds like alot of you have never been across the border. just before you cross there is a sign that says "you could be subject to a search". and thats for exiting and entering.

are they gonna image ipods as well? what about other mp3 players? at the rate they're going, pretty soon my casio digital watch is going to get imaged. fuck this shitty corrupt country and their assinine policies

yes any digital storage devices they will and do image
We had an email that got sent around when the US started this (btw UK based but work for US comp) and they basically stated ONLY travel with what you have to as well as only travel with digital stuff that you don't mind losing for a maximum of 6months

remember when we use to be anti-communist until a communist market boomed? now we bow down to their economy.. even if they are killing people. hell we'll even adopt their ways.

So someone putting up a sign suddenly removes my constitutional rights?

search is one thing, i totally understand the need of a country to protect its borders.

this isn't searching, this is indexing, in some cases, this is seizure of technology with no guarantee it will be returned to you.

I have a friend who travels around the world on business all the time, and he's never had any issue with laptop indexing/searching, or any memory based device for that matter. So im sure theres some pretty specific targets that border control has in mind. Part of me doesn't trust the system. I just keep picturing a bunch of employees taking all the mp3's and porn and shit that they index and keeping it for themselves.

I wonder what people working for the government traveling overseas with government issued laptops are going to do since they are not supposed to grant access to those laptops to anyone..........

Heh, I think I'll wait for the Supreme Court to rule on this, because it WILL...

Injunction on the way.

Easily dismissed, but exactly right. The whole idea of "the gun went off when it hit the floor" and "kids blowing their heads off" and all that sort of thing is media hyperbole cooked for over 30 years. Compare the number of deaths due to household accidents with that number as well, and ask yourself if we should ban kitchen knives, slippery floors, and electricity.

hey or communist pig shit drugs... and the government is still importing them from china? how many people have to die before we get a new FDA

I don't see why this is so surprising. Our rights constantly get restricted in the name of "security." All it is an illusion. Ever go to the airport recently? You can't even bring a soda that you purchased at the airport through those gates. Ever try and carry a legally purchased firearm into California, New York, New Jersey or Chicago? Your constitutional rights aren't even univiersal within the country.

im going to put a 1tb zip file full of rick astly videos in my 1tb hitachi next time i travel lol

Never gonna let you down
Never gonna run around and desert you
Never gonna make you cry
Never gonna say goodbye
Never gonna tell a lie and hurt you

Silly statistics that only prove people don't understand statistics.

Ever go to the airport recently? You can't even bring a soda that you purchased at the airport through those gates.
At Detroit Metro Airport you go through security first, then you go into the airport terminal where you are free to purchase whatever beverages and foods you want to bring onto the plane.

Well then maybe we should make a law about uniform location of beverage dispensers across all airports. Theres some sensible legislation.

Yeah its like that in all airports. Majority of the airport malls are inside of the security gate, so you can purchase things after you get through security.

Don't even think about carrying a travel mug filled with coffee through the gate. They'll usually tell you to dump the coffee in the trash bin, but every now and then there's an asshole who tells you to throw away the entire mug. I lost a computer expo mug this way once. Fucking rent-a-cops and their random policies.

I find it easier just to carry one bag through airport security anyway. Just throw it up on the x-ray conveyor belt and walk through. Women with purses the size of hockey bags are the ones that get held up. Every single domestic flight I've taken thus far hasn't taken me more than 10 minutes to get through security.

These measures are getting pretty ridiculous. I still think other countries should do the exact same things to Americans entering their borders. Mexico has threatened to put up their own border fence, other countries should start doing tech searches/imaging to entering Americans. Then we will see how long these policies last.

I fucking hate this country. Time to move... maybe Canada, I'm testing out Japan in a few months maybe I'll brush up on my nippon.

I mean, I can't even enjoy the fact I ahev so much freedom as I watch it slowly be taken away. All those soldiers who have died for "freedom" over the years are rolling in their grave.

Way to go you red neck pieces of shit, you want your WWII movie and American pie yet you will rpae your own citizens.

bah..,

This pisses me off so much i can't even articulate myself

Man, talk about a load of BS. This really pisses me off.

Evidently the constitution is just a piece of paper.

Goddamnit , maybe somebody will tar and feather the motherfucker instead of letting their freedom be abused.

We should tar and feather the RIAA too. Fuck them, fuck this, fuck this country. I don't even know how we can take it back.

fuck the world

At this time I will not enter the United states for vacation. This has pretty much solidified it. Having a goverment search your personal data at the boarder with out just cause is just plain stupid. If I ever have to travel to the United States with business, 256 AES encryption will be in place. Can't pry the password from my head. Unless I get tortured.

There's a reason that I refused to book my vacation to mexico unless the flight didn't touch american soil. There's just something about going through a border crossing for a country that you expect to be corrupt, over going through one where you assume they aren't.

Also, this has me rethinking whether I want to bring my lappy with me to Seattle next week. (road trip)

Security at airports is a joke. Can some realyl tell me why it is even necessary? Is that much security(ineffective) really needed to prevent something bad from happening on a plane?

It is pretty much a given no airliner will ever get hijacked again, so what motivation is there to try to hijack one? There isn't. If you say to incite fear then there are thousands upon thousands of other much easier targets to hit.

For domestic flights there is absolutely zero reason the government or the airlines need to know our names or what we carry on those planes. Fine, if they really have to then go ahead and check for guns and bombs, but if I was a terrorist and wanted to use guns or bombs I'd blow up a metro bus...or a shopping mall...or a nightclub...or a restaurant...yeah I could keep going.

The fact is security was more than enough on 9/11.. Policy was the problem. More security hasn't made us any safer. In fact, we are all at greater risk of being incarcerated now than before 9/11 due to excessive searches. We may accidentally bring "contraband" to the airport, get pissed off and argue, or have something on our laptop that TSA doesn't like. How does that make us safer??

I prefer to drive now, and sadly I can't even do that without being spied on... Texas has a whole lot of red light cameras up that have video surveillance as well. I can't even leave my residence on foot without being subject to one of those cameras..

After writing all that, I'm pretty disheartened about where this country has gone..and where it is going... :(

Oy vey everyone's taking it waaaaaaaaaaaaay out of proportion.

They're not saying they will. They're saying they can.

If I ever have to travel to the United States with business, 256 AES encryption will be in place. Can't pry the password from my head. Unless I get tortured.
1. they'd crack that very quickly if they absolutely wanted to
2. they don't need to torture to get the information they want
3. you have the wrong mentality

First off, I fully support the second amendment -

That said, "So, statistically, doctors are approximately 9,000 times more dangerous than gun owners." is not true. This is based on 'accidental' death statistics.

What is more dangerous - a gun owner potentially causing accidental deaths or one potentially causing intentional deaths? What is the whole point of a gun?

How about re-running this statistic with intentional deaths by Dr's vs intentional deaths by gun owners?

^^^ then if they don't they really aren't helping anyone!!! The law should read that everyone will be searched. EVERYONE.. Lets see how many of those senators and congressmen have kiddy porn on their machines! Knowing the attitudes of those jerks they are bound to find more criminal info on their machines than anyone else.

So, It should be everyone or no one. How long before they start scanning our brains for impure thoughts?

You really want to make this stop all you have to do is get everyone to bring a 1TB drive full to the brim with Mc Hammer's Can't touch this... NA...na..na..na.....Can't touch this!!
