I cannot get open office to open. When I try to launch any of the applications I get a SELinux Security Alert.

"
Summary:

SELinux is preventing /opt/openoffice.org3/program/soffice.bin from making the
program stack executable.

Detailed Description:

The soffice.bin application attempted to make its stack executable. This is a
potential security problem. This should never ever be necessary. Stack memory is
not executable on most OSes these days and this will not change. Executable
stack memory is one of the biggest security problems. An execstack error might
in fact be most likely raised by malicious code. Applications are sometimes
coded incorrectly and request this permission. The SELinux Memory Protection
Tests (http://people.redhat.com/drepper/selinux-mem.html) web page explains how
to remove this requirement. If soffice.bin does not work and you need it to
work, you can configure SELinux temporarily to allow this access until the
application is fixed. Please file a bug report.

Allowing Access:

Sometimes a library is accidentally marked with the execstack flag, if you find
a library with this flag you can clear it with the execstack -c LIBRARY_PATH.
Then retry your application. If the app continues to not work, you can turn the
flag back on with execstack -s LIBRARY_PATH. Otherwise, if you trust soffice.bin
to run correctly, you can change the context of the executable to
execmem_exec_t. "chcon -t execmem_exec_t
'/opt/openoffice.org3/program/soffice.bin'" You must also change the default
file context files on the system in order to preserve them even on a full
relabel. "semanage fcontext -a -t execmem_exec_t
'/opt/openoffice.org3/program/soffice.bin'"

Fix Command:

chcon -t execmem_exec_t '/opt/openoffice.org3/program/soffice.bin'

Anyone help? (I am a super linux noob)

I think this was fixed by an update just after F12 was released. Do you have all the updates installed? Do "yum -y update" as root and see if that fixes your problem.

If not I'd just disable selinux and be done with it.

how do i delete selinux

edit /etc/sysconfig/selinux and make sure "enforcing" is replaced with "disabled"

try the following command from the CLI "oowriter" and copy/paste the error message(s) here. Also have you recently performed a "yum update -y"? If not please issue that command first.

ran the yum update -y, i am updated

the oowriter is running now

Try and launch it again and dump the output of "dmesg|tail"

i dont know how to do this. mind telling me?

Keep trying oowriter at the command prompt till it crashes/doesn't open, we need that output.

Openoffice is quite good, don't give up on it!

does this help

I'm not sure how you got that output, was it from a yum update? Dump the output of this, "rpm -qa|grep openoffice"

sorry for being such a noob

Oh, I see it! Fedora 12 does not yet have OO3.2, did you install this from the openoffice.org site?

im really not sure. i think it was from their site. what am i missing?

just checked, i did get it from their site.

Yeah, it is always best to install the Distro's own packages when possible. 90% of the software your looking for can usually be found there. I'll get you setup, do these as root:

Code:
rpm -e openoffice.org3-math-3.2.0-9483.i586 openoffice.org3-writer-3.2.0-9483.i586 openoffice.org3.2-redhat-menus-3.2-9472.noarch openoffice.org3-3.2.0-9483.i586 openoffice.org3-impress-3.2.0-9483.i586 openoffice.org3-dict-es-3.2.0-9483.i586 openoffice.org3-draw-3.2.0-9483.i586 openoffice.org3-en-US-3.2.0-9483.i586 openoffice.org3-dict-fr-3.2.0-9483.i586 openoffice.org-ure-3.1.1-19.26.fc12.i686 openoffice.org3-calc-3.2.0-9483.i586 openoffice.org3-dict-en-3.2.0-9483.i586 openoffice.org3-base-3.2.0-9483.i586

Then install from fedora:

Code:
yum -y groupinstall "Office/Productivity"

That will get you some of openoffice, now you want a nice GUI to find other good stuff:

Code:
yum -y install yumex

Now got the good stuff fedora can't package due to closed source code:

Code:
rpm -Uvh http://download1.rpmfusion.org/free/fedora/rpmfusion-free-release-stable.noarch.rpm http://download1.rpmfusion.org/nonfree/fedora/rpmfusion-nonfree-release-stable.noarch.rpm

You will now have Applications > System Tools > Yum Extender, from here you can search tons of good stuff.

Check http://www.fedorafaq.org/, more good how-tos.

Code:
rpm -e openoffice.org3-math-3.2.0-9483.i586 openoffice.org3-writer-3.2.0-9483.i586 openoffice.org3.2-redhat-menus-3.2-9472.noarch openoffice.org3-3.2.0-9483.i586 openoffice.org3-impress-3.2.0-9483.i586 openoffice.org3-dict-es-3.2.0-9483.i586 openoffice.org3-draw-3.2.0-9483.i586 openoffice.org3-en-US-3.2.0-9483.i586 openoffice.org3-dict-fr-3.2.0-9483.i586 openoffice.org-ure-3.1.1-19.26.fc12.i686 openoffice.org3-calc-3.2.0-9483.i586 openoffice.org3-dict-en-3.2.0-9483.i586 openoffice.org3-base-3.2.0-9483.i586

that gives me an error

Man, how many different packages does their install give you!

ok, do this then, I'm having touble guessing:

Code:
yum -y remove openoffice.org3-math-3.2.0-9483.i586 openoffice.org3-writer-3.2.0-9483.i586 openoffice.org3.2-redhat-menus-3.2-9472.noarch openoffice.org3-3.2.0-9483.i586 openoffice.org3-impress-3.2.0-9483.i586 openoffice.org3-dict-es-3.2.0-9483.i586 openoffice.org3-draw-3.2.0-9483.i586 openoffice.org3-en-US-3.2.0-9483.i586 openoffice.org3-dict-fr-3.2.0-9483.i586 openoffice.org-ure-3.1.1-19.26.fc12.i686 openoffice.org3-calc-3.2.0-9483.i586 openoffice.org3-dict-en-3.2.0-9483.i586 openoffice.org3-base-3.2.0-9483.i586 ooobasis3.2-core01-3.2.0-9483.i586

that removed it. so now i just need to reinstall.

you are the man!!!

i ran yum -y groupinstall "Office/Productivity" and everything installed

thanks a lot, i owe you big time.

now im just pushing my luck, but do you know how i can change the way fedora looks? ive seen pics when i was trying to install openoffice of different style menus. where can i get those?

System > Preferences > Appearance

Fedora is available with Gnome, KDE and XFCE, all different! I'm guessing you installed the default Gnome, which is my fav, but they all have about the same options.

Be sure and check out compiz Fusion.
