Hey, I'm using a BFGTech 6800GT OC 256Mb and I turned everything on High, AA to 4x, set soft shadows to on and watched the framerate fall flat on it's face. It's still playable, but choppy.

So, I'm wondering, what video cards are you guys running? Cause I'm thinking I'm going to get me a new card and another gig of memory but haven't a clue on what to get.

I do however want to stick with BFGTech as I love their cards. But I am open to new ideas.

Ifyou want those details on Fear you best be buying minimum a 7800 GTX or a 7800GT with mad overclocking

F.E.A.R is a very intense game.

Looks like the 7800GTX is a better card.

Looks like I'm gonna put my 6800GT OC up on the for sale boards to see if I can at least get part of the money for it.

I have a X850XT-PE
I have everything set to MAX, AA X 4, AF X 16, Soft Shadows on, Voluemetric Lighting on, water reflect all.
I get above 40+ FPS at all times
But I have to run at 1024 X 768

I'm running it at 2048 x ???? (Can't remember the rest). It runs good with AA off and Soft Shadows on.

Dunno. I'm probably going to get the 7800GTX.

Thats not true.
I have seen a few 7800GTX SLI rigs that are running wide aspect and maxed all out that run it fine!

What resolution?

1920x1080 with most on max and some on medium, 2xAA is all that my system can handle. 4xAA and it gets choppy.

Game still looks AMAZING though. WOW. Absolutely AWESOME game. Best of 2005 for me.

fear sucks
it doesnt seem to run good on any hardware @ higher res

Have you played it at all or are you judging the whole game from what people say about its graphics?

And please, good is not an adverb :)

I can't run max at 1920x1080 that's for sure... anything over 2xAA at 1920x1080 kills it too.

Cough*BS*Cough...unless youre playing at 800 x 600.

At 1280 x 960 an FX-53 with 2 gigs ram and 7800GTX SLI will barely stay above 40fps in the stress test at those settings.

I find this to be aggrevating, i want this game, but why would i want to pay $54 for the game and another $400 for an upgraded vid card. I just built this rig about 6 months ago. Is this game really that intensive, im getting ready to buy the viewsonic v191b. what card would i have to get to run this game ok at those settings? i have a bfg 6600gt OC and 2gb ram right now.

Your 6600gt would run it at 1024x768 decently, my 6800gt along with the system in my gets 1280x960 2xaa 4xaf all settings maxed except for reflections and videos, no soft shadows. The game is playable too.

My friend is running the game on 512mb ram, a 2.6p4 and a 9600xt, he says its playable at the lowest settings.

Okay in most heavy gun fights it might have droped into 26FPS range, but I sware to you it ran awesome for me, all I had to do was run it at 1024 x 768 and it evened out.
When I pushed it any higher I had to kill the eye candy!

I am using two 7800GTX's in SLI mode. I have everything maxed, no AA, and 16xAF. I find these settings fully playable (see test results below).

I read that the game does not even ALLOW AA and soft shadows simultaneously!

No, what you read was that they consider it almost insane due to the performance hit.

You can run both.

u really dont need softshadows and aa (at high res)

those 2 things hurt performance too much in this game (and in most other games) w/o giving u much image quality, wut really brings out the image quality in a game imo is af :)

AA makes a massive difference in quality, even at high res. ( 1920x1080 )

Even on a smaller screen, too. On my Benq 1280x1024 19" 4xAA looked MUCH MUCH better than 0xAA

I would imagine a 9600XT could run it 800x600 everything medium.. Not the greatest, but still nothing to complain about.

I myself use a Leadtek 6800 - AthlonXP 3200 - 1gb DDR400 combo, and have no probs running it at 1024x768, 2xAA, everything medium. Smooth for the most part..

Ive also noticed a huge difference between the OS i run it on. I ran it on XP, and its smooth, but my Server2003 partition just blows it away. Maybe its just me.

I am not sure what 'extra' software components most people are putting on their gaming machines lately, but I can play F.E.A.R. SP at 1600 x 1200 with no AA and 4x AF, of course no soft shadows, and still have an excellent gaming experience! Occasionally, when I get surrounded by a group of the enemy soldier guys, FPS go down and I might see a little glitch here or there. Otherwise, there are older video (X850XT) cards on the market that can (Imagine that!!!) run F.E.A.R. at solid performance levels. I think this is definitely more so the case when peoples' gaming rigs aren't bogged down and bloated by unnecessary software.

Well, like I said, I am running everythign at the highest settings at 1280 x 1536 and it doesn't hiccup. But as soon as I turn on AA4x and soft shadows it bogs down.

I didn't really notice a difference with AA on so I knocked it down to 2x and still haven't noticed that much of a difference. But with soft shadows turned on I noticed how nice the shadows looked.

Maybe I'll turn off AA all together and leave on soft shadows and see what happens.

My rig isn't bogged down with unecessary software. It's a gaming rig. That's all I do on it is game. (AMD64 3500+ 1Gig Corsair OC'd 3%)

Plays pretty good on my spec

Min 31 - 0% Below 25
Avg 49 - 33% Between 24 to 40
Max 92 - 67% over 40

Computer High Spec
Video Custom Spec
- Shadows to Medium
- AA Off
- AF 2

All newest Drivers except 5.9 Cat's as apposed to 5.10's

The trick (as someone stated before) is to enable soft shadows first, run perf test and confirm soft shadows. Hit esc, then enable aa. Now watch as your rig screams in pain!

And now you can say you've seen AA and soft shadows ;)

I have all the settings maxed with 0xAA/ 4xAF and soft shadows off. It's smooth as butter. I wish I could play at 1600x1200 but it really doesn't look bad at all on my LCD at 1024x768.

For those of you with older systems, I made a post in another thread regarding performance. Rather than repost, here' the link. This was done with a Radeon 9800 with a large overclock on it. I believe a Radeon 9600 XT would score about the same.

How would it run on a 9600xt? lol

I just beat it yesterday and I use a stock clocked BBA 9600xt.

Other specs - Pentium 4 2.4 C overclocked to 3.0 Ghz (250 FSB)
1 GB of RAM (3:2 divider, so still at 200 Mhz)
Hardware accelerated audio (Audigy 2)

I ran at 1024x768 with medium graphical settings, no AA, no soft shadows, and it was quite playable, but had that bizarre semi smooth feeling. At 800x600 it was fine. It doesn't look that great though, Half Life 2 at looked much better at the same settings (and I could use higher graphical settings in HL2).

Anyway, runs fine...just gotta keep the resolution low. I tried to run it at 1280x768, nope, it wouldn't have it!

edit: With your specs, I'd shoot for the 800x600. Even with an overclocked P4 and 1 GB of RAM 1024x768 barely made it. (wasn't really smooth, but wasn't choppy either, it was just weird)

ATI x850XT here.
P2.4b 1GB 2700

Runs good with no AA and no soft shadows. @1024x768
Textures I turned down to medium to avoid any choppiness.
My CPU sucks though.
Still fun, but I wish it would give me a little more love. :(

I am kinda hoping that the Cat 5.11 drivers will offer a bit of help with FEAR.

I have everything maxed at the default highest rez (1280x960) ..and when I say maxed ...I mean ..everything is maximum or on , AA maxed, AS maxed

game is great fun and looks pertty

I run a GTX SLI setup with a x2 +4400 @ 2.5ghz w/2gigs (2x1gig) of ram and clean WinXP Home (soon to be 64bit) ..raptor 74gb drive

I only have a 19" LCD monitor ..would be cool to run one of those Dell widescreens

this damn game makes my rig feels slow...

like everyone else i have to run on 1024x768 for it to be playable... anything higher and it becomes noticably choppy... i have to turn down most of the details too... i cant get many of the special effects going on which really sucks...

im running the game with the config i have in my sig btw... and it just doesnt seem to cut it. :(

GTX SLi, sandiego @ 250x11, 4x512singlesided micron 5B-D, 250mhz 3-3-3-8

Everything on maximum, soft shadows on, 4xAA, 16xAF, High quality/TSS-AA in nVidia control panel. Sometimes it drops low, but still more than playable.

Ok guys. Here is what I get:

1280x960, 4xAA, 16xAniso, Soft shaddows on, Volumetric lights on, everything on max.
