The Federal Communications Commission has written a letter to AT&T warning the company that its DirecTV plan violates net neutrality rules. The company has two weeks to respond. Again, if there were no data caps, this wouldn't be an issue. :(

“We have therefore reached the preliminary conclusion that these practices inhibit competition, harm consumers, and interfere with the ‘virtuous cycle’ needed to assure the continuing benefits of the Open Internet,” FCC wireless bureau chief Jon Wilkins writes in the letter, which requests a response from the company by December 15th. “These are incredibly popular free services available to millions of customers,” AT&T said in a statement. “Once again, we will provide the FCC with additional information on why the government should not take away a service that saves consumers money.”

I thought it was understood that net neutrality would be killed off after the next FCC guy is installed? All AT&T has to do is appeal the judgement until then. :) The FCC hasn't even gotten around to making an actual case yet.

Net neutrality was a nice idea, but I suspect that it will get killed off ASAP.

It's a toss up. Just have to wait and see. If they side with corporations, it's going to suck.

Trump has nominated a 3rd net neutrality opponent to his transition team. AT&T is probably just thinking they'll keep this going until Team Trump undoes NN then get the FCC to foot the bill, that'll teach them for trying to stand up to us.

Uh oh guys FCC sent us a letter. We are screwed now!.

normally these are followed up with hefty fines. So they would care. Normally few hundred millions get people to care about FCC letters.

I don't like to discuss politics, but I read the same thing. So in my opinion net neutrality is dead forever. AT&T and Verizon already know that it's dead and are awaiting the official statement from the government.

Net neutrality is not dead, it was aborted long b4 we got to this point in time.

Net Neutrality is probably going to die under Trump. I hope I'm wrong. I know most of us probably thought Wheeler would block it, given his ties to the Cable Industry, but he turned out to be good on most fronts. I doubt we'll get lucky again, but I hope we do.

I look forward to having to pay an additional $5.99 a month to view HardOCP.

Corporations win again.

It's cute that some of you all think what we have now is actually the premise behind net neutrality.

We never had and never will have true net neutrality.

One of the biggest isp owns NBC universal, that should be all the evidence you need.

Yeah we should definitely make an imperfect system worse. Good call.

What I see is people arguing for the status quo, rather than pushing for real net neutrality. 2A proponents have been fighting in this way for decades and where has it got them? A little worse off on average year after year. We need to argue for steps back away from corporate and government control of the Internet, not just keeping it the way it is. That way, when the time comes for the inevitable "compromise", our side actually gets something in return, rather than just losing a little less than our enemies were asking for.

Yeah that seems to be a common theme with a lot of people these days. Making things demonstrably worse in hopes that someday they get everything they want and a pony too.

I was so surprised the Wheeler turned out to be fairly pro-consumer, sad to see the FCC fall back in crony hands again.

It really is just a job to many, if not most people. He worked for them, and did a good job for them, because they paid him to. I do not usually hold where they have worked against people. It's not like he was working at a Nazi death camp b4 taking his job at the FCC.

Well, there was always a revolving door at the FCC, it hardly ever went well for consumers when a Lobbyist became the head of the FCC and went to regulate his buddies before going back to the industry for a cushy job.

Wheeler was kinda a big exception to the rule more or less, I think the babysitter "dingo" analogy at the time was spot on for him, but luckily he went against the norms and surprised many. Probably wont have the same cushy job offer waiting for him at the door though.

I don't expect lightning to strike twice. We'll see.
