i have five fc ssd's i got for free as well as two fc hbas. i was curius of the cheapest way of seting these up. i asked the same question on toms but couldnt get any help
 
What brand/model are they? And/or how old are they? I didn't think anyone was still making drives with a native FC interface.
 
i dont know the age but they are Zeus IOPS SSD Z16IFE3B-400 and pull around 500 read and 500 write each so i would like to get them running
 
If you don't have a specific need for FC SSD's (or don't want to RAID/JBOD them), you might want to fleabay them (a 5 pack generally goes for up to $500) and purchase some SATA/NVME drives you can more easily integrate. They are most likely EMC pulls and they are good drives. Which HBA's did you get? Do you have the requisite cables/connectors/T-Adapters etc?

i would like to get them working if possible i hate sata drives (my curent system is a large raid of sas drives) and nvme drives dont like to work well with my mobo. i would raid them if i can. curently all i have ia a qlogic qle 2640 hba and these drives. im looking for the cheapest way to get them running.

Which 2640 version do you have, the one with HSSDC or SC optical connectors? Basically, the reason I suggested selling the FC drives unless you specifically need/have a FC infrastructure is because if you don't have everything it isn't cheap. You are going to need 5 T cards (or a backplane) with the proper adapter cables (DB9/HSSDC/PTP) and possibly a GBIC adapter to go from copper to fiber. It is not going to be cheap, probably 300-500 (or more) by the time you are done if you need everything. You can find some more info on interfacing bare FC drives to your PC here and here. You can get 12Gb/s 400GB SAS SSD's on fleabay for about $200 or so, you might be better off selling the FC drives and using the money to buy SAS drives in its place. Easier to configure and a lot less to go wrong.

its the sc optical one. and i would like to get this setup if possible for the learning experiance and maybe cheap upgrades in the future. a lot of 5 of the same drives i have didnt sell at 150 so selling them might not get much. would it be possible to get this working with a chassis like this? if so what do i need?

Anyway you dice it, it'll be hokey and hacky as all hell. The best way is to find a case that supports FC drives, and you put your drives in it, then out the FC ports on the back of the case to the FC cards installed into your server. If you want cheap? Get some sata to FC drive adapters and throw the drives on your current mother board. Other alternative is to buy a SAS card that supports FC or get SAS to FC adapters.

one more thing, the 2460s are OLD. They are no longer writing supported drivers for the latest version of Linux or windows. Well.. you can download the drivers, but they haven't been updated in years, so they may or may not work, and if they work performance or reliability would be an issue.

im aaware i would need more this thread was to see what all i would need. im also aware the 2460's are old but i would rather get something working than update the hardware later. could you check the post above to see if that chassis would work? and do you know of any fc to sas cards or adapters? that would be GREAT if i could find those
 
Your mileage will vary with buying used old FC stuff. There was a thread posted a few weeks back about going FC for home use. Problem is anything you can afford has already been depreciated and there is no support for. You misunderstood what I said about the 2460s. Its not that they are just old.. They stopped writing updated drivers for them. Meaning, they may or may not work, and if they do, reliability will be an absolute issue. IE, dropped luns, dropped paths, or sluggish inconsistent behavior. I have experienced this in my current environment and I'm removing all 4gig from my environment. As you go with more modern OS's the cards will flat out stop working. Same with any array you can get off of flea bay. good luck making sure the firmware on the array is 1, customer upgradeable, 2. you even have the option to download the firmware from the vendor with out a valid contract and 3. compatible with your HBAs firmware levels. Unless you are direct connecting, you'll seen some san switches. Same applies to the san switches. Good luck getting support.

Quick google turned up some hits that help with FC to SAS converters. Google but they blow your budget.

Once you try and step up your home game to FC.. it gets way more expensive with very little return. Those 2460s are 4gig FC cards.. 4gig is dead, don't waste your time trying to cobble together a solution to work for those drives. Sell them, and buy a decent consumer drive with the proceeds.
 
one more note.. I reached out to my contacts over at EMC.. the drives you have? yea.. they have custom firmware on them from EMC specifically for VMAX and most likely will not function properly with any other array other then a VMAX or VNX. You may be able to reflash them, but highly unlikely as that part number is enterprise customer use only.

ok thanks for the info. this is pretty much what i neeed to just buy a lot of sas ssd's and throw them in my curent config instead. however, i really apriciate your help on this thread.

just a update i managed to get 5 HITACHI HUSSL4020ASS600 200 gig ssds off ebay for relatively cheap (i would have tried to look on this fourm but their is some unspoken rule to post in the fs section that i aperiantly havent found yet) indevidualy each drive was getting around 250 mb/s read and write in raid 0 i get 1220 read and write whitch is astonishling close to 100% scaling. i have them on my mobo raid controller because sell sucks and the perc 6i i was using is a terrible peice of hardware that can burn.
