FBI Developing Tattoo Recognition Software?

The Electronic Frontier Foundation says that the FBI is working with researchers on advanced tattoo recognition technology. First it was facial recognition, license plate databases, and now tattoo recognition. I'm scared to even think about what's next.

Right now, government scientists are working with the FBI to develop tattoo recognition technology that police can use to learn as much as possible about people through their tattoos. But an EFF investigation has found that these experiments exploit inmates, with little regard for the research’s implications for privacy, free expression, religious freedom, and the right to associate. And so far, researchers have avoided ethical oversight while doing it.

Frankly I give not one flying fuck about any inmate's privacy, free expression, religious freedom, or any other rights some feel they deserve. I am too old school.

I don't think they should kill them, not until their appeals are done or unless they are escaping, or trying to kill someone else. Well if it's each other I suppose it's not so bad.

I don't think they should be beaten, unless they are harassing prison staff or being assholes to visitors.

I think they need their three squares and a place to sleep, the facility should be cleaned but if they mess it up between cleanings they can live in it until the next scheduled cleaning.

Books are ok, maybe a little TV for the well behaved.

But most of these things are not rights, they are how you treat someone with a minimum level of decency and if they aren't behaving decent in return, well fuck'em.

An animal is an animal. If it bites you, put it down cause it will just bite someone else.

Haven't they had this for years in the prison system?

Law Enforcement and Correctional Authorities have been studying criminal tattoos as long as criminals have been tattooing themselves. This is just a way to do it in an automated manner.

Not on this level by far. They mostly used to just document them and used them for future identification and possible affiliations/associations. Now they're trying to actually understand exactly what these individuals are thinking and have it all readily available to law enforcement.

In the near future someone with a tattoo will be walking through his local mall and tagged as a possible problem from some scanner. Future looks super exciting and oppressive.

I didn't read the article but this could be like a secondary system to facial recognition. Tattoos can be as good as a state issued ID card when it comes to identifying someone who doesn't want to be identified (has warrants, officer has lawful reason to ID them, they claim not to have ID on them).

We could all poison the well with a mess of temporary tattoos. Not a fan of tattoos myself, but the EFF does have some good points.

You're going to have to pretty efficient with the slaughter and corpse disposal parts of your prison system; poison gas showers and crematoriums were used to great effect in similar systems in the past. You can cut costs by not bothering to feed them since you're just going to kill them all anyway.

What does this have to do with anything?

I'm also skeptical about the EFF being able to stop this. If you are in public then you have little to no expectation of privacy, akin to your license place or other externally displayed unique markings. I just feel bad for the future hipsters and diner waitresses who will be recognized slightly before the facial recognition picks up the rest of us. ;-P

Cops love neck and facial tattoos the best - makes recognizing you much easier. Makes sense to have Tat recognition. Soon, cop cars will have license plate readers (many already do), facial recognition, and now tattoo recognition. What next?

Isn't the entire point of a tattoo to attract attention and make a some sort of statement about yourself? Seems like this software would be a dream come true for them.

Yeah, I'm not sure that getting face and neck tattoos in order to stand out from the crowd is compatible with whining about an invasion of your anonymity. If you wanted to be anonymous, then why did you get a tattoo?

Well, reading the post I quoted should give you a clue. But if you need to expound upon it then I'll be around.
