I'm on my second Xbox Elite 2, which I was able to buy on sale. I know the sticks will eventually start to drift, so I've begun looking at other options when a replacement becomes a necessity. I'm not opposed to spending over $100 on a controller, but it has to hold up and these Elites don't.

I'm also hoping to upgrade to something with less lag, which means 1000Hz.

I gave the Gamesir Tarantula Pro a shot recently, and tbh it feels awesome. The hardware is really well designed. Software and documentation is another issue. Took me a couple hours to get the controller and dongle firmware updated, but I couldn't get the connection to last more than a few minutes. It would start to lag after about 30 seconds then disconnect and be unable to reconnect. Four hours in I decided to just return it. I think the software is still in beta and I was a tester.

The 8BitDo options are interesting. I wish they had four mappable buttons on the bottom like the Elite. Still, they seem like they might be the best option, all things considered?

Lot of options on the market these days, so I figured I'd start a thread in case there's something I missed.

can you put some TMR sticks in it? thats what im going to do with my reg controller next time the drift starts. the 8bitdo ult 2c does look nice though...

Some brief research indicates TMR sticks are hit or miss in Xbox controllers. It's an interesting option though. Sticks aren't too expensive, if the controller is worthless otherwise, may be something to try.

ah possibly. i was only seeing issues with the cheapest ones. the 8bitdo controller has a 5% coupon on it and is only $30US(amazon), theyre even on sale up here right now, might be worth a try.

$30 is pretty hard to pass up...Might have to grab one of those.

Ordered the 8BitDo. For $30 it's a good backup when the Elite 2 invariably starts to fail, and I can use it to see how noticeable 1000Hz is for me.

I recently fell into the control pad rabbit whole.

TL:DR the Xbox Elite 2 is an overrated POS and it's only redeeming quality is the proper rubber ergonomics and 4 way force feedback.

I actually kinda went backwards. Always had an old xbox 360 pad for joypad games, then decided to get a new semi decent one for the sake of buying some new shiny, and after a bit of research I found a good deal on an "EasySMX X10". Seemed to tick all the boxes, Hall effect sticks, actual buttons for the buttons etc. Everything about it was just miles better, except for the ergonomics. It was flimsy as fuck though, so I set about modding it and tl:dr broke it, so said fuck it and bought the exorbitantly priced Xbox Elite 2 Control Pad. I'd only heard good things about it and the underlying theme was it was just pure quality and class out of the box, so slapped down £150.

Then when I actually used it I realise it was pretty crap! THEN I discovered the polling rate rabbit hole, polling rate overclocking, and that the Elite 2 is stuck at a piss poor 125hz! It's even worse wireless at around 80hz. It actually clocks in slightly worse than my ancient decades old original 360 pad!

I made a nice graph, and bear in bear these are all wired.

The old 360 pad actually gets a few pings in quicker, but you can see they are basically the same. Hardly "Elite". The cheap Chinese EasySMX X10 £30 pad destroys it, and that's to say nothing of the far smoother joystick due to it having Hall effect sticks and the Elite 2 the same damn crappy joystick as the 360.

Anyway, despite this, I decided to mod the Elite 2, I added a couple of juicy capacitors to the big motors, and put tons of extra weight on them as well, dremmelling the guts out. I could go on, but now it's my goto pad simply because it feels good, even if it's noticably worse technically. If I was doing anything more twitchy than a driving game then I couldn't accept it though.

*edit* I've actually since bought another X10, as I could keep the weight mods I'd done previously, it was only the motors that broke due to my dodgy soldering.

I friggin love 8BitDo's hall effect controllers. Between my son and I we have 5 of them already. Wired and wireless variants. Maybe won't work for professional level matchmaking in games, I don't know, but I also don't care about that.

I got the 8BitDo Ultimate 2C, and it's a nice controller. The build quality doesn't feel as good as the Gamesir Tarantula Pro or Xbox Elite 2, but it's significantly cheaper than either so that's fine. Overall feel is still pretty good - the sticks feel great, triggers and buttons are pretty good. The plastic casing is noticeably basic, but for $26 I'm not complaining.

Compared to my Elite 2, it does feel more responsive. I definitely notice the faster polling rate, although it's not life-changing. I don't play competitively, so take that with a grain of salt.

The best thing about the 8BitDo is the software just works. I was up and running in about two minutes, compared to four hours of failing with the Gamesir.

I still use my Elite 2 50% of the time. The custom paddles on the elite are really nice and it's just a more premium feeling controller overall. Still, I'm not going to buy another one when it inevitably fails, so it's nice having the 8BitDo around.
