I have an issue and I can't figure out if it's a power issue or video card issue. I have a Powercolor Radeon 4870 and one of the red LED's on the back of my video card is on. After researching what it is, I can't seem to find much other then it could be a bad PSU or card. It's labeled as "D601" which supposedly means "critical Core power fault".

I first noticed it a few months ago come on but didn't think much of it since my PC was running fine. Usually if I turned off my computer and turned it back on again, the light would NOT be on. Over the past week or so, it's constantly on no matter how long I leave my PC off.

Now I have 2 Radeon 4870's but my system is only running one due to recent stability issues of being able to run both at once. Thing is, if I swap the cards, the same LED light was on on my OTHER 4870 (same type and brand). When I have both cards on at once running in Crossfire, only the first card has the dreaded LED D601 on.

What this problem is causing me is random crashes in games only. Sometimes my video driver "ATIKMDAG" stops responding in a game, causing it to lock up. I then have to ALT + TAB out to get to windows to close game and then it recovers again successfully and everything is ok. This only does this in a few games I own though.

I've checked the connections and everything looks ok. Temps on my card idle from 45c-55c (depending on fan speed) and load temps are usually 70-75c. When this issue occurs, GPU-Z is reporting my VDDC Current jumping from 55-76 Amps. Is that bad?

Any ideas as to what may be causing this would be great help.

Specs:

Core 2 Duo E8500 @ 3.8ghz
Intel DX48BT2 Mobo
Powercolor 512mb Radeon 4870
Vista 64-bit SP2
And my PSU - Enermax Galaxy 1000w. It's older then everything else on my PC too. And unfortunately, I have no other PSU to test out.

Hrmm, I may have figured out the issue myself. Figures, after I post for help. My video cards come overclocked at stock. Has an aftermarket heatsink so should be fine but I downclocked my video card speeds and everything so far seems ok.

I'll have to check it out more.
