I recently built my new pc and I am suspecting a bum cpu. It's a lga775 3.4 presscott on a MSI 915p neo2 platinum.
I am aware of the haet issues with this line and upon first boot the bios read the proc temp as 89C witch i thought was
pretty fishy. But I kept going and installed windowsxp pro sp2 and updated all drivers and bios and everything seemed fine
However when I started running benchmarks things got screwy. The sisoft 2004 Dhrystone ALU came out to only 4701 mips!
The Whetstone FPU/SSE2 was only 2706/3395! I ran the test several times and achived no better than 5203 on the Dhrystone.
Thats less than halve of my roomates 3.06 533 northwood. The proc temp in windows ranges from about 56C idle in the
MSI core center to 73C idle in Speedfan and thats when I fire them up one after another. I know the cpu is inserted
properly and it has been reseated twice with new thermal paste each time. I'm only running the stock cooler but
it can't be that bad. I've also downloaded throttlewatch and under any type of load test the cpu throttles constantly from
66 to 100%. The PC runs perfect under windows however it simply dies when I fire up UT2004. I play one or two maps
and the computer just turns off. No errors at all. Has anyone ever experienced these types of problems before?

Sorry for the long post but I've built and worked on computers for years and I'm stumped

Detailed Specs

3.4Ghz Presscott P4 LGA775
MSI 915p Neo2 Platinum
512Mb Corsair DDR2
MSI 6600GT PCI Express
Coller Master 350W power Supply
In Windows:Vcore 1.36v
3.31v
5.0v
11.60v(low?)

that +12v rail is VERY low, go into your bios and see what it says, dont trust windows based programs, or even better, a multimeter.

Another reason i think is the heat, are you using the stock HSF? reseat it. scrape off the thermal pad and use some arctic silver, or reputable thermal paste. When i FIRST got my LGA775 setup i had to reseat the stock heatsink 4 times before i learned how to use those stupid push pins the right way.
