I was wondering what you guys feel about the hardware that has problems where you can RMA it back.

What do you think the percentage is?

Different percentages fro different hardware parts? What percentage for each project?

I need this info for a project I am putting together...Thanks...

I would put motherboards at the top. Most of the problems are user configuration ones and poor manufacturing quality control, in my opinion.

Second place goes to hard drives. I think most of these are like above, except in reverse order with hardware failure due to manufacture coming first, and user error coming last.

Percentages? That's a tough one, but I believe they are less than most people think because most everything I've built worked without hardware failure. I suspect that my experiences are about average. There are some brands out there that I tend to avoid, however.

I've built at least a couple hundred systems, probably more. I think I've only RMA's two motherboards. The only other peice of hardware I can think of that was faulty and required RMA was a creative labs modem.

I too would put motherboards at the top of the RMA list, but I firmly believe that the vast majority of problems with motherboards come from improper installation or configuration rather than actually hardware-faulty motherboards.

Motherboards I think are more prone to arriving damaged because they're a lot larger than most hardware, and have parts that stick out that can break with rough handling, namely caps.

I forgot. I've had some hardware issues with associated equipment, lately. Wireless LAN stuff seems to be a bit below par right now. I think that's because it is fairly new technology.

I own a couple computer stores, and what get's RMA'd the most?

hard drives.

WD for the most part, i hate those clicken' clackin' bastards.

nuthin worse in the COMPUTER industry than hearing:

click click.....................................click click...................CLACK CLACK

Like the guy above i own a pc store.

Instore the thing i RMA the most, or recieve broken/damaged is cases.
Most likely due to fedex screwing up.

To date i actually have very good expieriences with motherboard returns. Mostly because i make sure to brief the person quickly so they know what they're doing. And i always mention RTFM

IMO improper handling (by the end user and in the case of HDDs the source\shipper) is the leasding cause of component failure

specifically improper ESD precautions
followed by poor power
and in the case of HDD improper installation \ environment
(if the damage hasnt already occured in transit)
