Fault tolerance issue

setting up fault tolerance to test out and ran into an issue i can figure out. Haven't used FT at all before and trying to see if someone can point me in right direction.

my environment:
3 HP DL380 G6 hosts.
MD3620F Fiber san
Running esxi 5.5u1 and latest vcsa vcenter

everything seems to be working correctly like HA/DRS/vmotion/shared storage.
I'm using dedicated gigabit nic for FT Logging and 2 gigabit nics for vmotion
vmotion and storage vmotions both work by themselves without issues.

Ran Site Survey tool 2.5.3 and everything passed with Green check marks

I created a small 1 cpu /256MB CentOS vm that I'm trying to do FT on.
It has 8GB thick vmdk

Issue i'm having is trying to power on secondary vm

When vcenter ties to power it on i get:

A general system error occurred: The migration has exceeded the maximum
switchover time of 8 second(s). ESX has preemptively failed the migration to allow
the VM to continue running on the source. To avoid this failure, either increase the
maximum allowable switchover time or wait until the VM is performing a less
intensive workload.

and Alert is displayed "Vcenter disabled fault Tolerance because the secondary VM could not be powered on"

any ideas what I'm missing?

license looks fine. I'm running demo and its licensed for FT

This may be a stupid question but how much RAM do you have in each host? Amount free in each? Are you using VDS or a VSS? Is there a CD/ISO attached to the primary FT VM?
 
each host has 96GB RAM. 2 hosts have 12GB used and one host has 2GB used
no cd/iso is attached to primary ft vm.

Primary ft vm is 256MB in ram
 
I am at a loss. Nicholas brings an interesting thought to the table. What if you load something like test Win 7 VM with 512MB-1GB RAM and try it?
 
yep its weird. according to that link:
All guest operating systems supported with ESXi are supported with vSphere FT unless noted below.

and guest OS i'm trying to protect is centos

Let me try another vm. i can test with windows 2008 R2 as its already on the cluster

web client shows more info which also makes no sense as vmotion and storage vmotion both work perfectly fine without FT
Error stack:
No suitable host can be found to place the Fault Tolerance Secondary VM for virtual machine dns2.
Host 172.xx.xx.xx has some Fault Tolerance issues for virtual machine . Refer to the errors list for details.

Failed to receive migration.
vMotion migration [-1408186346:1404401809436615] The remote host closed the connection unexpectedly and migration has stopped. The probable clause of the closed connection is a migration failure detected on the remote host.
 
Just tried it with windows 2008 R2 vm and got same error as above. very weird.

Try direct connecting with the FT nic - see if that clears anything up. Shouldn't matter, but give it a shot. That sounds like the vmotion trigger for the secondary vm isn't getting sent correctly.
 
not an easy task. servers are in a datacenter space so i have to go there to direct connect them. Plus i have 3 host cluster so i would have to remove one host. Its weird because vmotion is working without any issues by itself. I'm using milti nic vmotion with 2 vm kernels. I wonder if that causes an issue for ft?
Is secondary vm vmotion going over FT logging nic or does it use vmotion nics to accomplish that?
 
Should use FT logger, I believe, but I've almost never used or seen anyone using FT at this point.

Easier - unconfigure the multi-nic vmotion, see if it works then. That's nice and simple to do.
 
I have yet to use FT in any environment i worked at. This is more of a lets try and see what happens. I'll give unconfiguring multinic vmotion a try and will probably stop there as i have other things to test and certify before this cluster goes into production.
 
yeah - I'll do some digging on monday as well. I just don't get asked about it much, and it tends to be a "turn it on and it works" thing for the few times it gets used so I don't think about it either.
