Ok, so what the hell is it and what good is it? I have X800 and fastwrites are on. OMG. I don't understand what it is for?
 
id like to know too. nothing seems to tell me so I grasp the concept.
 
i disabled fastwrites and i put 128 meg Aperture size on athlon 64 system in my Signature
 
Thank God PCIe will kill this "fastwrites issue" for good. Some people swear that everyone should turn it off, others couldn't care less. On my PC I have it on, and even when I turn it off, it automagically switches back on when I reboot. Never did me no harm, but if it causes problems for you, just turn it off. Don't worry about what it does, there's no conclusive proof that it either speeds up or slows down a PC. Maybe on a select few systems, but they're more of an exception than the norm. :)
 
Normally when the CPU wants to get some data to an AGP video card, it copies the data to the motherboard RAM and then the AGP card reads the data from the motherboard RAM when it's ready for it. It's a means to decouple the CPU and GPU so one isn't waiting for the other. Almost all AGP traffic is done that way. In AGP 1.0, if you wanted to send data directly from the CPU to the video card it was done at the same speed as a 66MHz PCI slot. When AGP 2.0 rolled around, they decided to add a direct CPU to AGP card method which ran at full AGP speed and they named it fast writes. Unfortunately, full speed AGP transfers can occasionally be flakey. That's true whether you're talking about fast writes or plain old AGP reads or writes. If the transfer is just the AGP card reading texture data from the motherboard then noone notices the data corruption. But a large fraction of the data which is transfered using fast writes tends to be command data and that kind of corruption causes hangs and crashes. As a result fast writes obtained a bad reputation for reliability. Most BIOSs allow you to disable them in case you're having problems. It's rare for fast writes to have any noticeable affect on performance. I tried to see any difference in benchmarks once with my 9700 Pro and couldn't find any. If you're having any kind of problems you can just go ahead and disable them and not worry about the performance issues. There are a few cards (I think the Radeon 9600 series) which run noticeably slower if you disable fast writes on but most cards really don't care.

i tend to leave my 9800 XT video card's fastwrite off just to get more performance. :D

Edit: seem like ur system tend to crash if u leave fast write on?
