Which Xeon CPUs is the fastest for one-threaded programs? I don't need a multicore CPU as my program cannot be paralleled. Thanks.

this one, https://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu.php?cpu=Intel+Xeon+E3-1280+v6+@+3.90GHz&id=2988

the i7 7700k is faster at half the cost. do you need a Xeon proc?

this i3 is faster than that Xeon and only slightly slower than the 7700k and is only $169,

here is the list of processors and their single thread rating,

Thanks. I need ECC RAMs too and therefore I want to get a Xeon CPU. Will there be a faster Xeon CPU in the near future?

well, this one just came out, so probably not in the next 9 to 12 months, would be my guess.

Depending on what instructions your program likes and how much it benefits from memory bandwidth, a cherry-picked unlocked haswell (E5 v3) might technically be faster. You could get one a good bit above 4.2 and skylake IPC improvements vary a lot (sometimes 0) based on instruction type.

But yeah, an i3 or similar would be way way cheaper. I wonder about your need for ECC, you could literally have 2-3 practically as fast systems doing the same work for the cost of building a top-bin E3 w/ ECC. E5 would be an even worse value.
