whats the fastest video card u can buy for an agp system? thx... i was thinking a x800xt-pe or an ultra extreme... thx

Pro's and cons for both....IF u can find one go for XT PE, or grab a Pro VIVO and mod it to an XT PE.
 
Yes it will still work and you should not see very much decrease in performance. There are very few applications out there that can really utilize the extra bandwith that 8X provides over 4X.

I'd go with a 6800U, with all the technical problems the source engine is having (stuttering, crashing, etc), I wouldn't be surprised if many more game devs picked up the Doom3 engine - and the 6800U takes the x800xtpe to town in that engine. Other engines they trade blows depending on map/res/etc.

Also the 6800U has SM3.0, and future games that use it extensively may not run well or be missing graphical effects on the sm2.x x800xtpe.
 
I already have a 6800U and I'm happy with it. If I was in a position to buy again and I had the choice of the 6800U or the XTPE, I'd get the XTPE. If I had the choice between an Ultra Extreme or an XTPE, I'd get the UEE without pause.
 
I'm not sure that you can find an Ultra Extreme anywhere. Also, what does the rest of your system contain if you;ve only a AGP 4x slot?

There is a good chance that you could be bottlenecking the crap out of one of the latest and greatest Vid Cards.

yap im sure i would.... i have about $600-700, but my comp. now is crud...... its only a 2.0ghz p4 witrh 400fsb and 512mb of ram..... but i don't know if i can upgrade my processor, becuase i baught my computer from gateway.... thx

PLAY THE GAME there are no stuttering crashing problems anymore and its been lik ethat for a long time

You can't. You can however buy a 6800U and slap on watercooling, and get a card faster than an Ultra Extreme in many cases.

Nope, the stuttering bug is still not fixed for many people even with latest Dec 22nd path including myself. In fact, the latest patch introduced 1 second stutters on explosions, when using buggy in turbo mode, etc now and then that were not there before.

The Vampire Masquerade Bloodlines game based on the source engine also still has the stutter bug and has not yet been successfully patched.

Doom3 engine or CryEngine seems like the smartest choices for a developer/publisher if they do not want a support nightmare.
 
Eeew Gateway. You'll do well to dumb that reliability nightmare and get something better. 6800U gets my vote. It may sacrafice a few fps for better image quality, and less "optimization" trickery which the ATI drivers use to get extra fps. I wouldn't be surprized if the ATI cards were actually markedly slower than the 6 series cards if they both had all optimizations OFF... You simply CAN'T do that with ATI drivers however. You can in forceware rather easily and simply. Its all about what you value more; quality or quantity of the frames you get per second. Whats 10 or 15 fps when you're already at the VSYNC limit constantly in games running 1600x1200?
 
i still get stuttering problems with CSS/HL2 when i minimize or maximize it, or change any video settings. any help?:(

Off the top of my head I think it was eVGA who produced a few 'official' Ultra Extremes. Otherwise, Gainward sell an Ultra guaranteed to hit UEE clocks of 450/1200. I think these are in pretty short supply though so you might have to wait for one. There again you'll probably have to wait for an XT PE as well.

then don't do it anymore! choose the settings then play! the only reason u get stuttering(who doesn't) is because the game has to change the textures in-game and it will freeze/stutter for a few seconds.


o yeah and the guy above.. get a 6800GT and a new processor, you will get better fps and a card that is really an ultra when you overclock it.. instead of throwing your money for a "6800UE" or "X800XTPE" get the 6800gt for 400 and 200 bucks on a 3.0ghz pentium 4 or 3.2.. and if your mobo doesn't support these high end cpus, grab the highest cpu for your mobo..

The same can be said about the XT PE. I've seen people with good cooling pump thier cards up to 600/630. The fastest card on the market is a matter of sheer speculation. Both the XT PE and the Ultra are lightning fast. I have owned the Ultra and traded it for a voltmodded XT PE on stock cooling 560/590. The XT PE wins by only a few frames per second in most of the tests I've done 1600x1200 with some degree of AA and AF used, according to Fraps. Honestly, I could tell no real difference between the cards.

this is just funny....people who want the fastest video card that don't even have agp8x motherboard....it's a waste of money to try to use the XT-PE on an AGP4x platform!!!

instead of blowing 500 on that video card

try to get the following

Chaintech NF4 Ultra from newegg 120
Athlon64 3000+ 150
1GB PC3200 cas2.5 dual channel 150
Radeon 9600Pro...100 (or if your current video card is better than the Radeon 9600Pro, save the money, and get a 480W Antec True Power Supply)

for a total of 520...and I guarantee you a better overall feel than the XT-PE would provide...
 
if he does choose to go pci-e. u can get a 6600 vanilla for like 110 i believe which will destroy the 9xxx series still.

he is right. you barely have a system that will push a 600 dollar graphics card. Imagine a top framerate of 40-50 no matter what you do. go with that suggestion above.
