Fastest Single Slot PCI-E card?

Buddy is wanting to upgrade is 8600GT in his Dimensions 5100 PC.

He's over in Germany so I can't do much for him here as far as building a new computer and he doesn't have the tech know how to do so himself.

So what's the fastest GPU that's single slot?
 
currently, the ati 5970 :)

edit: oh, single slot (thought you meant single card). Not real sure.... I know a company was working on a gtx260 in a single slot design, haven't heard much about it lately though
 
Yeah I found the 9800GT's he's thinking it might be alittle long. Bout to tell him to order one if it doesn't fit then send it back :p but not sure how the return policy's are for the places he can get them from.

The difference in length between his XFX 8600GT and a EVGA 9800GT is about 3"
 
if you were worried about an 8800/9800, it might be overkill. When I upgraded to my old 260, from an 8800, I had to rearrange the HDD cage to make room for it.

it'll blow away any other single slot GPU though :)
 
Wow that is awesome. It would work nicely in a shuttle if it fits length wise.
 
Is his PSU stock? He'll need to change the PSU for a GTX260 I think...
 
Yeah he's upgraded his PSU already.

He might actually just get another PC he's trying to get his grandmother to get him one for x-mas.
