Is the Raptor still the fastest SATA drive for single-drive use?

According to StorageReview's Leaderboard
Lists the raptor 150gb as the fastest single user drive, but says this:

"WD's newest Raptor delivers the best single-user performance one can buy regardless of interface and spindle speed. For those with more expansive budgets, Hitachi's Deskstar 7K1000 offers performance that matches and in many cases even exceed's that of the Raptor while offering more than six times the storage of WD's petite unit. "

Raptor is still the fastest.

That being said i agree some of these 1TB are a better value, speed is still very very good, and you get a 1000 Gigs rather than 150...either choice is good.

Ok, great info.

I'm a bit confused though....

It first says the Raptor is the best, but then says the Deskstar can match it.

Not sure how to read that.

Let me go compare prices. BRB...

Ok, I'm back.

$200 vs. $380.

Have the Hitachi's been reliable? I replace dozens and dozens and dozens of hard drive a year so IBM/Hitachi makes me a bit nervous :)

Wish the warrant was longer too.

Thanks!

I have the hitachi and its too early to say if its reliable or not. I also have had the IBM in the past that have died. I believe they failed because of heat so I try and keep my hitachi cool. It does run pretty cool and quiet though.

About the performance of the hitachi vs the raptor I think that quote means that overall (read, write, seek, etc) the raptor will win if you average the scores. The hitachi though often comes close and sometimes beats the raptor on some test, but considering the value per gig of the hitachi its a good choice.

I think Tom's did a review of the WD 750GB and it also did very well performance wise so you might look into that drive more if you want a more reputable brand name and large capacity.

All it's really saying is:

The Raptor is king across all tests, but the Hitachi can match it in some in addition to offering much more storage space, thus making it mention worthy.

The Hitachi doesn't match it across the board completely, just in some cases...but since it offers so much more space at about the same performance it might be the better buy.

More clicking on links and looking than just basing everything off of one quote ;) There are tests where the Raptor wins by a couple MB for example..it's close enough to be considered "matching".

seagate has a 1TB drive also. Not sure if that's in the retail channel yet though, I would expect WD to follow up soon too
