What would be the fastest rig for encoding video?

Like now I'm encoding a 800meg mpeg1 video putting
it on a DVD via nero vision express 2.
It's going to take my rig 1hour 45min. :(

Thanks for the input,
Bradley

EDIT: I just looked at my task mang and my CPU is only running 50%.
What's up with that?

Also is there any better software for doing this??

If you check your task manager again, You will see 2 cpu's showing up. That's what HT is. 2 virtual processors show. one's at 50%, the other's @ 50% = 100%

Go here and look around

http://www.doom9.org/

check the guides and downloads.

I used to use TMPGEnc with good results, Seemed to use both cpu's in my duallie rig.

30 day free trial here. Not hard to use, but harder than nero.

but i've been just using nero latey on my htpc rig with a dvd burner. But im assuming you only have the one and hate waiting.

Using nero my celeron @ 3.6ghz in my shuttle box is faster than nero in my Duallie amd rig @ 2300mhz X 2 each.

For video encoding, including DiVX, it's the MHZ that count. Not the memory timing or the memory mhz, but the cpu MHZ. The more you have, the faster it will be to encode video.

Celerons are good for something. I take a big hit gaming. But still can get about 14.5k with a 9800 pro.

Thats like putting a turbocharger on a Ford Tempo...lol.

Celerons are good procs but still budget procs and perform much less than top of the line. What? You thought you were going to get a Cadillac for a Chevy Cavalier price....lol.

Damn batotman, your hard drive capacity increases everytime I look at your sig

Oh yeah, if you want to buy a celeron you'll probably get better mileage buying at Athlon XP.

Yes your right. I have 8 XP F@H rigs in my Basement. And i build 10x more amd rigs for customers.

I've got a shuttle Intel box For TV,DVD burning Encoding.

I just cant find the socket 462 to 478 adapter I had around here somewhere.:D

And my DVD encoding runs faster on my celeron than a 2300mhz AMD XP.

Indeed. If I could afford 6 250GB's instead of the drives I got I'd do it....lol. And I actually use the space!

Are you using a high quality iDCT?
I've found 3dnow iDCT's to have lower quality than reference x87 or even fast x87. I've played with SSE2 a bit on my brother's P4, wasn't really impressed.
How does the P4 do using the x87 iDCT? With the streaming nature of video encoding, the P4 FPU should do quite nicely... curious for my TVbox future upgrades.

Havnt bothered with divx in a while oldman. Probably 8 months since good DVD burning software's out and cheap disks.

DVDshrink and Nero6 is all i've really used lately. Or TMPGEnc for Divx downloads back to DVD, which is faster on intel. All of the 3 i listed are faster on my celeron in testing.

Divx encoding Amd still does do better.

Got a pair of 8x DVD NEC 2500a's in my duallie rig, and a 2500a in my shuttle. For "backing up" my movies.

6 F@H AMD 2300mhz+ rigs in the basement.
1 Intel Vapo rig in sig, Computer room
1 shuttle HTPC 3.6ghz intel
1 1.6a P4 @ 2.8ghz in family room
1 Amd duallie 2 X 1700xp's @ 2300mhz each computer room
1 3.2ghz Dell 400SC Server Daughters room.
1 toshiba 3.0ghz laptop 17" LCD

Plus whatever im working on @ the moment.

I do a lot of F@H for xtremesystems and i support my local electric company!!
