fastest possible CPU with passive cooling?

I want to build a PC with mostly passive cooling. only fan I plan on is the PSU fan, and that one will be quiet and prefereably adjustable. water cooling is not an option, I just want a low powered, passively cooled PC. 1ghz? 900mhz? is it possible or do I have to dip to 800?

Via makes some passively cooled solutions. Also i believe Antec makes a PSU now that does not have a fan. Passively cooled PSU. And if your trying to get a passively cooled Intel/AMD solution your going to have quite a tough time i think trying to find a truely passive solution. I've seen 800mhz Slot1 solutions but there was a chassis fan blowing air across it. :confused:
 
Really, any modern processor can be cooled passively, This is just all dependent on how much money you are willing to spend. You would need lots of heatpipes, special heatsinks designed for passive operation, ect.

yep, i more or less agree... you can make a very quiet system with minimal fans and have everything 'passively' cooled... or you could make a w/c setup with a huge heatercore/radiator, it all depends on how much you want to spend/how much you care about temps...
 
just get that like 800$ zalman case that is 100% fanless and can cool just about any processor (the entire case is a big arse heatsink, and there are heatpipes all over the place to connect to cpu/gpu etc..)


EDIT : Sorry it is over 1000$, and it is the TNN500A (totally no noise)
 
Can't you just run an A64 or barton at a slower speed with the lowest voltage it will post at. I'd get the biggest heatsink you could find for it and run it at 100Mhz FSB and a 6x multiplier or whatever the lowest is and bump it up till you max out the heatsink.

Any Pentium M can be passivley cooled.
Most AXP-Mobiles can be passively cooled (may require you to drop the clock speed a bit to get the voltage low enough to make the HS reasonably sized)

My 2400+ 45W AXPM is pretty easy to passivley cool (Thermalright SI-97 HS) if I just dip to about 1.7ghz (1.8 is stock) and can drop it to about 1.25V.
 
478pin regular celeron can run with a good heatsink without a fan...
 
I think we have covered by now its not what CPU you pick, but what heatsink and PSU / exhaust setup you pick.
 
I don't understand why you'd go through the immense trouble and expense of passively cooling a computer when you can buy 14db SilenX or 5v low-speed fans that will cool your processer twice as well and still be virtually undetectable.
 
tryign to avoid immense expense. all that I am going to do with this PC is playback media like DVD's, MPEG and AVI's. need to keep it very quiet so we can sleep with it in the room. one intake fan and an exhaust fan woudl probably be doable. I ahve a p3 800 that is workign with a duct fromt he intaks fane ans then the exhasit ast the rear. might try that.
 
oh, if you're just playing back movies the via mini-itx boards are probably perfect for the fact that you can squeeze them into a nice case and have it LOOK GOOD too :D
 
custom up some kinda heat pipe that goes straight to the top of your case, and make the top of the case 1 giant heatsink
 
Dude, I think the only real option for a power user is to rig something up with a Dothan. I dunno though man.... alot easier and piece of mind easing to go with something extremely quiet than totally silent. Read a review even on one of the via that even while it ran silent... it ran hot. Adding the puniest of fans dropped it's temperatures dramatically.

I assume you're dropping the dough on a noiseless PS than too? If not, you're really putting yourself in a tough spot for nothing. edit: yeah I read more of the thread. You are going in the right direction. Go super silent but not silent. I'd have a tiny fan on my cpu before I had an intake. Comps used to just be exhaust and cpu you know. Anyways, the tiniest of compromises can get you more cpu and cost friendly options.
 
My suggestion? Get an Athlon 64 Winchester core, which is much cooler than the A64 Newcastle or (especially) Pentium 4 Prescott. Then lower the multiplier a tick or two and install one of the big passive heatpipe coolers.

To reduce noise, get a steel case with 120mm fans like an Antec SLK3700-BQE or Sonata. Plug the fans into the PSU's "fan only" connectors, and they will run *really* slow and quiet, while still moving decent amounts of air.
 
Why do people keep suggesting to underclock and / or buy cheap poor performing CPUs?

Both rated for 3.6ghz. Just position it so the PSU fan pulls from it, or add a 120mm fan and use a zalman fan mate to turn it down to under 1400rpms.
