Fastest Intel Processor

What Intel processor has the fastest clock speed? I have a application used at my work that is OLD, it is single threaded and is very processor intensive. The new Dual/Quad/Six core machines aren't really doing much for us because we need faster clock speed, not more cores with a lower clock speed.

Any ideas on the best processor for this sort of us?

And yes, I know that the application should be multi-threaded, but this isn't an option as it is a year from being phased out and is written in VB6 and .NET 2.0.

Your best bet would be an i5-655K. It's stock @ 3.2ghz, if you want to hit the 3.3ghz stock range, you're hitting quad/hexa chips.

This is a good chip for your purpose. Remember the IPC advantage of Intel i chips. An example of this is a 2.66GHz i7 920 will have similar single threaded performance to a 3.4GHz AMD Phenom 2.

Aside from the highest clocked 2C i5-680 (3.6Ghz base / 3.86Ghz Turbo), the fastest would probably be the Xeon X5677 (3.46Ghz base / 3.73Ghz Turbo) because of the higher IPC (more cache mainly).
