A friend has a Biostar Tforce 550 AM2 board, not AM2+ AFIK. Any idea what the fastest cheap CPU that will fit can be put in?
I gave him my old 5770, and I have a 6000+ but was hoping something cheap might be a big jump.

well based on what i can find it has a max TDP of 89w.. but for some reason biostars documentation on that board is horrible. so you could probably fit an AMD x2 5050e or something along those lines on it. if thats the 125w 6000+ then no it won't work on that board.

5000+ black edition or 5600+ black edition are the 2 fastest ones that I am aware of they are also able to clock up to match the 6400+ without issue and nearly as fast overall.

The 6000+ might work, but it also will probably fry the socket with heavy load or extended use.
SOME AM2+ cpu will work fine in AM2 boards example http://www.overclockersclub.com/reviews/athlon7750/16.htm if you can still find them. I would send an email to biostar or check the BIOS version history to see what processors are supported, it might be brutal hard to track down a "true" AM2 cpu, whereas there are still quite a few AM2+ cpu kicking around.

A quote from an article
Socket AM2+ with DDR2 for the 65 nm Phenom and Athlon 7000 Series
Socket AM3 with either DDR2 or DDR3 for the 45 nm Phenom II Series. Note while all K10 Phenom Processors are backwards compatible with Socket AM2+ and Socket AM2, some 45 nm Phenom II Processors are only available for Socket AM2+.

no this board won't support any of that.. and based on the lack of information my guess is the bios are hard locked just like my biostar tforce 780G was. i just happened to get lucky that biostar accidentally released a beta bios without the TDP locks. this board is from back when biostar used VRM's that barely met their own rating requirements they gave for the board.

while all your information is correct none of it applies in this case.

AMD Athlon 64 X2 5000+ Brisbane 2.6GHz Socket AM2 65W Dual-Core Black Edition Processor ADO5000DSWOF, so yes it will work.
AMD Athlon 64 X2 5400 Brisbane 2.8GHz Socket AM2 65W Dual-Core black edition Processor ADO5400DSWOF as would this
AMD Athlon 64 X2 5600+ Windsor 2.8GHz Socket AM2 89W Dual-Core Processor ADA5600CZBOX as would this.

I have the 5600+ Windsor for sale.

if you know or can read the serial number on the box(SKU) or on the prcessor itself, you may have gotten lucky and have the 89w 6000+ which "should" work fine
Basically the 6000+ 3.0Ghz based on Windsor @90nm stepping is F3 and125w TDP
the newer 6000+ 3.1Ghz based on Brisbane @65nm stepping is G2 and 89w TDP

So if you have the "newer" one, no problems, I wouldn`t even attempt this with the older one, could fry the socket, but the below link should help some for AM2 cpu, though I still know the AM2+ cpu(some of them) will work as they were made back compatible for a reason.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Athlon_64_X2 all or most of the information is here :)

Seems as long as its an 89w or less AM2 processor, you should be fine. There is apparently no support for AM2+ CPUs in the bios.

None of the first-generation (and very few of the second-gen) TForce 500 boards supported AM2+ processors, because they were 'physically incompatible' with AM2+ CPUs. I had a TF570SLI (wonderful overclocker, as long as you stuck with two DIMMs), and the above reason is what I heard from Biostar's Technical Support.

If you care to go for replacing or upgrading, to be honest, it's not worth to invest in like 6 year old platform(AM2 was released in early 2006). If you want to hold step with current application I wouldn't buy or invest anything in computer older than 2009. With the performance offered currently by low power cheapest processors will greatly exceed your fastest AM2 upgrade in everything. I didn't answer your question directly but I think the best thing you can do in this situation is to sell remaining components because they still can be sold well and get celeron G530+H61 board and 4 GB DDR 3 stick for $100 and you have computer fast as 3 X2-6000s if not even more.

6000+ or 6400+

Limitations: -Thermal, the mobo may not support 125W cpu -BIOS may not recognize the CPU but it should still work.

Examples: Most of the HP AM2 boards made by Asus. My Asus M2NPV-VM even has a bios update to allow Phenom II
