fast writes?

what are fast writes and what do they do? i have a 9800pro and i have the option to disable it or enable it. can someone please help me? thnx in advance guys/gals
 
Turn them off. If they work properly, they will allow your chipset to transfer data to the AGP port faster which will result in a 0.1% increase in speed. Unfourtantly, they never work properly and are the cause of countless stability problems in modern video cards. Nearly every video card troubleshooting FAQ I have read says to make sure fast writes are turned off first.
 
Fastwrites- TEH DEBIL :eek: Like jon said above the performance increase is minimal but it seems to cause problems for a lot of people.

If you want to watch High Definition content in windows media player 9 you have to enable it or you will be unable to play it. wmvhd.com is the kind of thing im talking about.

I run fastwrites with my A7N8X NF2 MB and 9800 Pro without issue.

Yes, I run it too and have encountered zero problems with both my rigs.
 
Is it true fastwrites work or are for only ati cards? And will give problems with nVidia cards? I read something about that a while ago

Well whenever I get bombarded with HD content for windows media I'll simply turn it on. (the only HD content I've seen were a few short pr0n clips :D )

Generally, ATi cards have problems with fastwrites and nVidia cards don't.

nVidia cards have issues with fast writes as well. Several of the nVidia partners have FAQ's that tell how to disable fast writes. I noticed it on eVGA's site.

You can check the forums at www.nvnews.com for threads on fast writes and the 6800's. I've seen several and most suggested disabling fast writes to improve performance and stability.

I can run the High Def stuff without Fast Writes enabled and I drop 0 frames even on their 1080i clips
