Fast DVD ROMS?

Hi all. Couldn't find much info on this anywhere, and didn't see a "CD/DVD forum" on here, so...

Does anyone know if there are any considerably fast and responsive DVD Roms out there? Both of my DVD roms are... to say the least... sluggish and annoying. They take about 10 seconds just to tell me what's on a disc when I pop it in (and freeze my computer while doing so), they rip slowly, and sometimes struggle to watch movies.

Oh, and the drive doors are pathetic when they open/close. And they're loud. I can't stand their guts... The only thing they DONT do is spew a complimentary puff of smoke when they open.

Are there any nice, fast, responsive drives out there? For reference, my main DVD Rom is rated at 4.5 mb per second by Passmark Performance Test. The other one (which is a burner) is slower.

What are your specs? Are the drives IDE? Is there anything on the other IDE channel?
 
Specs:
AMD 3800+ X2
2 gb RAM
Windows XP

I have 2 DVD drives on one IDE cable, and a hard drive on the other. My mobo has SATA, but I don't use it yet.

No... he meant one SATA optical drive, that way your only running one IDE device on that channel, theoretically increasing the performance of your IDE optical drive. I'm pretty sure the only way you'll actually see any increase in performance would be in situations where both optical drives are in use at the same time..

I thought SATA was something for hard drives. I've just never seen a SATA DVD rom before.

Okay EDIT...I'm an ass.. I obviously misread your response to my post and for that, I apologize... I thought you had double posted, and after re-reading it.... I'm wrong...

Oh, that... lol. Yeah, I was hyper-tasking in Firefox (kind of like multi-tasking, except in the realm of 15+ tabs and 3 browser windows across 2 monitors), and somehow ended up with a duplicate of my reply. I thought it was a post "edit", so I just hit submit, only to realize it was a completely new post. :)

Btw, would a SATA optical drive not freeze up my computer when reading a freshly inserted disc, like my IDE ones do? SO annoying, especially when all I do is open up My Computer, and Windows says, "AH, now would be an EXCELLENT time to check what's in your CD Roms and freeze your computer!"
 
Sounds like you also need to update your chipset drivers (namely your ide controller) and make sure your Optical drives are set to DMA mode.
