Fast Computer Clock?

I've been having this weird problem for the past few weeks. My computer clock seems to be a few minutes fast every few hours. I haven't done anything new to my computer recently. I have a Tyan Tiger MP w/ two 1700+'s running Win XP. I'm also running SETI but this problem came a while after I started running it. I've read a lot about how clocks can become slow from dying CMOS batteries but mine's going too fast... And doesn't that only apply when you shut down the computer? I keep mine on all the time and the time disparity occurs when the computer has been on, never shut down or restarted.

Please Help!!
 
Change CMOS batteries, they won't cost you that much anyway. WinXP should sync your computer to internet time every so often, perhpas a misconfiguration there would lead to Windows synchronizing to the wrong time zone (but that would be an error in hours, not mintues). In your case I doubt the time sync is even working. You can always check... ... I can't think of any other possible causes to your problem....buy a watch and place it beside your monitor?
 
If the sync is working correctly, then your watch is too slow? I see no other reason to this. Internet time cannot be wrong. Even if it is "wrong" it will still be considered to be correct.
 
Sorry if I wasn't clear... The computer clock is fast and I know because: when I press sync, it goes back a few minutes to the correct time, I have a wrist watch, and two other clocks that retain the synced and correct time. Thus, the problem is definitely on my computer, not internet syncing or watches.
 
Ah I see. It sounds like software issue then, but I am not 100% certain. You can always write a script to check if the processor timer is correctt. If it is, then it can be anything. Any software that has anything to do with the timer functions can contribute to your problem.

You can always adjust the sync rate to once every 5 minutes or so. Sorry I can't be of more help.
 
I am experiencing the same problem with my clock. The weird thing is, i'll randomly get a popup at some points (yes I use AdAware .. and SpyBot) telling me that if my Clock is displaying the wrong time, to click the link and buy some software to fix it. Obviously i'm not going to pay for any software, but makes me wonder if i'm infected with something thats messing up my clock (can't find it with any trojan scanners, or norton mind you), it might be worth it for you to check your comp for viruses etc., i've had no luck, but maybe you will. Good luck, hope you figure it out, if you do let me (us) know, its damned annoying heh

If it were software... Sounds more like hardware to me.

Clear your CMOS... Change out your CMOS battery. Does the time in BIOS also run fast, or just the clock in Windows? If it's just Windows, then it's probably a software problem, but I'm assuming it's also wrong?
 
The clock to keep time on PC's is notorious for being inaccurate, usually they run fast. It's caused by mobo manufacturers using cheaper oscillators that aren't tuned to the correct frequency for precise time keeping, changing the battery may help some, but synching with a time server a few times a day is the best bet.

I've also scanned my computer with Ad-aware, Spybot, and Norton AV... nothing.

I just installed a program that syncs the comp automatically every few minutes. You can find them at download.com. Here is a log of the updates as you can see, it varies a few seconds every five minutes.

For those who care...

I'm not sure exactly why but when I run Azureus, a Java Bit Torrent client, the clock speeds up like above. And when I shut it down, there's no longer a problem. I've been using it for a while but recently I downloaded the new version of Azureus and a new Java JRE and I've been noticing the fast clock.

Anybody know what's with Java JRE that causes this?

(I guess this should be moved to the software section now)
 
Let your computer sit in BIOS for a while.

Does it speed up there? If so, it's a hardware issue.

If not, it's a software issue.
 
is your computer id'ing your processor correctly? if it isn't then that's the problem.
