I shut down my last Athlon XP box today, but it didn't go without a fight... last workunit was a monster 1487.... frame times were 5 hours 7 minutes on an XP1800. Though for a PC that I pulled out of the trash, I can't do much complaining. After resoldering the power connector, it was good as new.


I guess it was pissed at being replaced by a headless Intel Q6600 :D
 
See if you can donate it to a school that needs equipment.

'There is a school that I'm sending most of my old hardware. As long as it will run XP I think it can be used. This school is running orig pentium chips from what I understand.

I'm a teacher and you have no idea how badly most schools need computers. In most cases if it's capable of running XP at all... slow or otherwise.. it's a machine that can be used.

I can almost guarantee that any local school can put that machine to good use.

 
My first folding rig was my old dual Athlon MP system. In fact, the first 4 cpu's to crunch under my name were all socket A. Served me well until their untimely deaths.

Anyhow, enough nostalgia. Enjoy the new quad.

 
Athlon XPs can run circles around most school PCs.
I donate all of my old equipment to our local grade school. After a quick wipe to get rid of the tubg1rl and g04tse you guys post in genmay. ;)

5 hours per frame! Geez, I didn't know the standard client can receive monstrous WUs that will take hours per frame on a machine considered a decent performer prior the multi-core era. It's a good thing you euthanized the poor thing.

 
If http://jmol.sourceforge.net/fah/?project=1487 is any indication, it was roughly equivalent to the SMP work units in number of atoms simulated. It was also worth 1741 points. I was always morbidly curious what would happen if you ran the SMP client on a single CPU system.... guess I have my answer. :O

That's a shocker for me. I haven't run the standard client since last fall. I never knew there were WUs equivalent in value to SMP units now. I think Stanford should have designed that particular WU for the SMP client. :eek:
 
Yeah, I get those monster 1487 units on my spare cycles client on my main box. It take about 5-6 days to get thru one.

 
Wow, didn't know the XPs were so "outdated". I still run a 3200, 2800, a couple 2600s, a couple 1600s.:rolleyes: I also have a couple core 2 in the mix with another showing up this week...:cool:

I still have two dual mobile Barton systems @2.2-2.3GHz that can run the SMP client. That's a total of 4 socket-A processors. If they were single socket machines I would likely not be running them unless I had a suitable ATI card for the GPU client..
 
Anyone know a good program to "clean" a HDD. Since I'm donating my old athlon rigs, and I don't want some puck who thinks he is a ha><or to pull up my old info.

Outdated had nothing to do with my decision to shut them down. I'd happily run them till they died. However.... $.14/kwh electricity, summer approaching, and a lack of working spare parts played a major part in my decision.
