Farcry 1.3 patch? Settle for 1.2?

Does anyone else find it odd that they have not come out with a new patch for Farcry after pulling 1.2? I have not installed 1.2 on my machine because I have been waiting for a new patch.

Should I just go ahead and install 1.2? Will I miss any of the graphical goodness with my 6800 GT and the 1.2 patch? How do I enable sm 3.0 and other new graphical improvements?

On another note will I lose saved games when going to 1.2.?

Thanks!

the old 1.2 patch won't give ya any new IQ improvements just speed.
To turn on the sm 3.0 path ya have to set this command in the console to 1

r_SM30PATH=1

(you can add this to your system.cfg file too then ya don't need to do it everytime ya load up Far Cry)

Now ya might need to be in dev mode too

to do that ya open up your exe file properties and add -devmode to the end of the command line.

This will enable sm 3.0 with all the speed increase. If ya have time though open up the editor, right click the command line in the log box area (should be on the bottom) and a list of all the commands will pop up and search for r_HDR. If its there well just have to set to 1 to turn on HDR :)

yeah the frist 1.2 patch wasn't very solid at all, lots of little things got broke, and majorly ATi cards all got wacked, which was really wierd because even when running the same 2.0 paths they were still messed up.

its wierd it only happened on certian configurations of hardware. Texture glitches, missing textures, etc.

Sorry if I'm remembering wrong, but didn't Crytech get busted a bit ago for possession of illegal software. The patch talk almost slowed to a crawl after that.

Plus, ever since they've got taken over by EA, they're output...has...slowed...down...like...crazy....

no they were accused by a disgruntal exworker, the FBI or someone came and investigated and CryTec proved everything was 100% legal....thats as much as i know

I heard that there was only two guys who worked on the 1.2 patch. With only two guys it may take awhile to fix bugs and add new SM3.0 paths that have been properly tested to work.

The 1.2 patch works great for me...

There are no particular graphical improvements added, but it fixes a lot of the problems that the 1.1 patch had (for 6800 series cards at least), and gives a reasonable performance boost. The SM3.0 path option is a nice addition, but doesn't add much to perofrmance, except under certain circumstances.

If you've got a GT the 1.2 patch will be fine....the vast majority of the problems were with Ati users.

That patch makes all the difference in the world to me. I was able to enable instancing and combined with shader 3.0 support I did not suffer any real performance loss. The games eye candy looks even better as it relates to textures all the way out to the horizon.

Here is a thread I ran after Trancedz tutored me on setting things up. The second half of the thread shows pics using instancing.

http://www.hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=785091&highlight=Shader+3.0

You have to read the whole thread to realy benifit. The intitial pics were sucky do to compression loss , then better shots and finaly at the end the high res shots with instancing enabled.

1.2 patch:

1. Everything DOES look better
2. Big speed increases....BIG TIME.
3. Sort of a hassle to enable 3.0 and delete the yellow text with a hex editor but not too much

My reasons to uninstall after a while:

1. Lose some sound/footsteps in some areas..obvious sound issues

2. And the big one: no 5.1 surround available.

Graphic/performance wise 1.2 runs without a hitch and really shows off Far Cry engine. sound wise it sux and is riddled with bugs.

Im using 1.2, have been since it came out, I have 5.1 surround working.

I didnt have to turn APIC off in windows, using ACPI hal.dll instead, but this is a DFI bios at high FSB issue not FarCry.

The only thing I'd complain about is, when 1.2 came out all the multiplayer servers went 1.2, so I had to move to it, then when the problems started and 1.2 was pulled most o the serves reverted to 1.1 So finding a server is now hit/miss. Thats my only complaint.

I lost the link to how to enable the SM2.0b so I've never tried it out.

Sounds like you probably installed it on top of the first patch.....the best thing to do was uninstall and reinstall the game before adding 1.2

Thanks for all the replies. I think I will give the 1.2 patch a shot.

Will this hose my game saves?

Thanks!

there was an issue with game saves the new patch its variable though it won't hose it but it might not be able to load em up.

okay, I have a Q for you Farcry folks.

I've never played this game but I recently just got it.

do I need to mess with any patches while using my XT PE? if so, which one should I get?

I thought this was just me! I can't get the 5.1 to work with 1.2 - and a bunch of other sound errors occur that pretty much ruin the game.

So to recap, 1.1 = graphically unplayable. 1.2 = acoustically unplayable. They're going to fix this, right?

/edit - can you go back to 1.1 by intstalling over it?

Well, i wish that were true. I've tried it both ways and still no 5.1. I've read this isn't uncommon. And the sound/footsteps missing (usually in the first level when you walk there is no splashing) shows up randomly in some levels.

From reading over at Far Cry forums it seems the development team disbanded shortly after the release of Far Cry and that's why we're not seeing any patches coming out.

I don't have high hopes for a patch 1.3, but If I ever want to show off far cry I'll definately be using 1.2 with my GT. Ah, man....that game was sooo close to perfect (with a patch)..yet so far now it seems.

See my post above. :D

No, but the improvements wont show in the saved games since the saves retain the original settings.

r_displayinfo=1

also just a tid bit, open up the editor and right click the log command line, gives ya a list of all commands.

If any one does run 1.2 you should be able to turn on off set bump mapping r_offsetBump and r_offsetBumpforce, make sure they are both set to 1

Yep just type r_displayinfo 1 into your console or ya can just put r_displayinfo=1 right into your system.cfg file and it will always be on.

to get to the console hit the tilde key...but I just use FRAPS for far cry and there are 2 benchmarking utilities for Far Cry out there if you google, Far Cry Benchmarking I think you'll find them.

I just tried both of those things and they didnt work.

adding it to the config file doesnt do jack and when I type it in the command console, it doesnt do anything either.

whats up with that?

weird, it really should work lol, let me test it out, got reinstall far cry gimmi 20 mins or so

oh yeah ya have to be in devmode

to do that open up the farcry.exe (right click go to properties and add -devmode to the end of the command line)

or you a can do this

start Bin32\FarCry.exe -DEVMODE %1 %2 %3 %4 %5 %6 %7 %8 %9

copy and paste that line into a txt file and put it into your install directory of Far Cry and rename it Far Cry Devmode.cmd and just double click it

I'm only using the 1.1 patch.

is that patch good enough for this devmode thing?

oh yeah devmode is avialable for all the versions, its just allows cheat code activation. Forgot certian console commands are listed as cheat codes.

Have you guys even played the game?

You don't need -devmode to display fps, but you do need it for god, all weapons, all ammo cheat. Your start parameter should look like this:

"C:\Program Files\Ubisoft\Crytek\Far Cry\Bin32\FarCry.exe" -devmode

If you want to display fps you need a slash just like I stated before. Press ~ to bring down the console in game or in the menus and then press [TAB] to put a slash in and type r_displayinfo 1

Lastly, god mode doesn't work correctly with the devmode cheat until you edit your devmode.lua file in the main game directory.

wait I ment edit the r_displayinfo = 0 to r_displayinfo =1 in the system config not add it should already be there. And the 1.2 patch I use ya have to be in devmode to turn on the displayinfo (I'm using a newer one)
