Bring down the console by hitting the ~ key. Then hit tab and a \ should show up. Then type r_displayinfo 1 (default value is 0, set it back to 0 to shut it off).


So to be clear, it's ~tabr_displayinfo 1
 
I play on 1024@768 32bit all VERY HIGH

and with AA MEDIUM

The internal indicator will give you other information though, various averages, the view distance, which lighting options are enabled, etc.

As for the question, I like FRAPS since different gmes have different console commands so you don't have to remember all of them...
