Far Cry HDR not working

I recently got Far Cry, and installed it and all the patches, I was really excited for HDR cause I saw it on my brother's pc and it looked sweet. When I type the command in the console (\r_hdrrendering x) for x I tried all the numbers 1-11. Nothing happens, the console returns r_hdrrendering = x but the game looks exactly the same.

Is there anyway to make it work??

My specs are: P4 2ghz
1 gb dual channel 2700 ram
Geforce 6600GT 128mb (agp)
80gb WD Harddrive

Well HDR and antialiasing are incompatible with each other so if you have any AA turned on you must shut it off. Other than that I don't really know what the problem could be...Have directx 9c?

You do need to enable the highest quality settings for HDR to work in Farcry. Honestly, looking at your PC's specs, its a waste of time. It won't likely be playable at 1024x768. On my 3.4GHz Pentium 4@3.9GHz with one 6800GT@Ultra speeds it was barely playable at 1280x1024. I mean try it of course, but I wouldn't expect it to be very playable on your machine. That 2.0GHz Pentium 4 will hold you back significantly and the vanilla 6600GT doesn't really have the muscle for HDR. Really the lowest card in the Geforce 6 series family that can do it is the 6800GT, even then you'll want to overclock it to Ultra speeds for best results.

Try updating to the latest version of Far Cry. I was on the original version and I couldn't use those extra rendering modes, upgraded to the latest FC version and it works, HDR also seems to work.

Mine:
Athlon 64 3200+
1GB PC3200
eVGA 6600GT PCI-Express

It does run a little slower than no-HDR but it's not bad.

I have AA turned off, possitive, Im running at 1280x1024 and it runs smooth at the settings its at, but it would be cool to see it with HDR, my brother runs it fine (3ghz, 6800) at 1280x1024 with no slowdown and everything on normal/high.

Ill try turning everything on highest :p but other than that I dont know, I got the newest patch and dx 9c, and 77.77 nvidia drivers

There is a HUGE difference between a 6800 and a 6600GT when it comes to any super hi-res stuff, and especially HDR. I can't believe that it would be playable at 1280x1024 with full detail and all the eye candy up. I'd love to know what kind of frame rates you are getting with that setup.

Seriously, my Pentium 4 550@3.9GHz with one 6800GT didn't do HDR very well with all the eye candy turned on with Far Cry at 1280x1024. With two of them in SLi it was alot better, definately playable, but I wouldn't go so far as to call it smooth.

Again I don't see how that could be just a "little slower" with HDR on. I am not trying to knock anyone's machine or anything like that. Please don't missunderstand, but I remember what kind of performance I've gotten out of Far Cry with various machines I've owned and run the game on, and I've never found HDR playable on most of the machines I've used it on. Especially not at 1280x1024 and certainly not 1600x1200.

On my machine the performance hit is noticable when alot of explosions from the trigen dudes with the rocket launchers for hands start going at it. Other than that it plays pretty smooth, but even on my machine I've got to drop back to 1280x1024 when I enable HDR. Granted EVERYTHING else is on high, and I am using the additional water effects that you have to enable via console or outside the game in the configuration utility.

So I'd really like to see some screen captures, with FPS from FRAPS or something showing what kind of performance you actually get. Playable FPS is somewhat subjective as I am sure you'll agree. Some people will play it without complaint when the FPS is in the 20's, but personally I couldn't.

I wouldnt have a screeny for you, I havnt personally lookked at his settings, but they arnt all on low, maybe there all on normal. His pc is 4 hrs from there, so I cant check right now, but I believe you when you say that hdr does take alot. I played Serious Sam 2 demo with it on and it owned my pc.

But I still dont know how to run hdr on far cry, it should atleast turn on, even if it doesnt run well

well, farcry with absolutely everything running maxed out, and at 16x12 and with HDR on, i was only getting 30fps on 7800gtx sli and fx-55

Drop down to 1280x1024 and the performance will pick up alot. I can run it about that fast on my machine at 1600x1200, and in the fire fights it can get ugly. At 1280x1024 its VERY playable and smooth as butter most of the time.

hmmmm you need to check some settings out then, because my 2.4Ghz P4 can play it just fine with HDR 7 at my LCD's native res of 1280x1024. (edit then I read further about explosions and stuff later in game, I didn't test it past the first 2 levels.)

But I agree about the poster not being able to play, but ever consider that he just wants to be able to see the effects? My computer dropped from the 90-110fps mark to 40-50fps when enabling HDR. The fps hit is heavy.

open up the console and enter this the exact way you see it

\r_hdrrendering 7

Actually a good way to insure your typing it correct, is to type part of it and then hit tab and it will finish the rest.

/r_hdrren and then hit tab and if typed correctly should finish it out for you.

the way i enabled it is i right clicked on my far cry icon and went into properties, then in target i put "r_hdrrendering x" (my preference is 5 for good but not overdone blooming) and hit ok. if it's not in correctly then it will tell you.

EDIT: This is very tempting to put up a few comparison shots for HDR/no HDR at the same resolution settings etc, I will if people want. I have maybe 90 shots of the very nice lighting effect in work.

You are using a 6800GT, worlds apart from a 6600GT. I said that it was playable, but not what I'd call smooth. Smooth is somewhat subjective. What you might consider smooth and what I consider smooth might not be the same thing. With one 6800GT I felt the game was a little choppy on my P4 at 1280x1024.

I fully agree with the first part, which is why I through more detailed fps numbers so he knows a little better how heavy the fps hit is.

And I through an edit back to my post when I considered later in the game the higher action and explosions and mess would likely make mine unplayable as well. But the first level or so was real nice.

Just happened to see this thread, mabey this info will be useful:
P4 3.0 Ghz Northwood
1GB PC2700
eVGA Geforce 6800 AGP
Win XP SP2

Farcry Settings:
Texture Quality: Very High
Texture Filter: Trilinear
AF: 4x
Particle: Very High
Special Effects: Very High
Environment: Very High
Shadow: Very High
Light: Very High

Framerate With HDR is in the 30's to low 40's, outside, never tested indoors, without HDR my framerate is much better.

Here is a screenshot:

argh  you just had to post screenshots didn't you. now I've gotta go the rest of the day with soiled pants :D

this sucks, I drool at those pics

Yeah, it even confirms that I entered it correctly, it says above it r_hdrrendering = 10 or whatever, maybe the 6600GT just doesnt do it? It says that it supports it on other sites tho :(

well now you made me go get a cool indoor shot

Notice the heat waves off the engine thing..so cool

This was done with the HDR bloom level set to 5, if it's higher it starts to get a little too bloomy. The game is rather playable with the rig in my sig. All is done with settings at very high and no AA on the non-HDR pics. Once you are into the game the lack of AA isn't as much of a difference as some may think. IIRC developers (Valve for example) are implementing HDR and AA at the same time without a ginormous performance loss.

Enjoy :)

Well my comments about playability with HDR on some systems were concerning 6600GT's and my own P4 system, which even at 3.9GHz, probably couldn't outrun an A64 3200+ in gaming. The 6800GT at the time on my P4 was alone. My A64 3800+ ran FarCry with HDR in SLi mode very well at 1280x1024. Still, no where near what my current machine does with 7800GTX's.

Also keep in mind, that the drivers I was using back almost a year ago on that Pentium 4 system, were different than the 70 and 80 series Forceware drivers we have now. HDR has been improved alot in driver revisions over the last year or so and as a result, the performance I got out of my old machine, may not be on par with what I would have gotten on that same system now.

All I am saying is that at 1280x1024 with anything but a 6800 series card or better, don't expect great thngs in Farcry with HDR enabled.

HAHA!!

Got it to work! Runs ok, but need to know the fps command..

I just turned everything on high, tried it, it worked, and started lowering things down, till its runable, now it works good and is pretty smooth, the fps command would be greatful though
