Could the little hyped sleeper Far Cry vy for a legit spot at the Game of the Year for 2004?

I know we have not seen Doom3 and HL2 yet but from what we have read and seen Far Cry seems to have come out of the gate at full speed with some similar technologies.

Great review here

Far Cry is a great game and WILL make the list for GOTY 04, but it won't win.

I didn't really like the demo, wasn't too exciting.
Maybe I'll buy it in a couple of months.

Eh how do we know anything about the Doom 3 and Half Life 2 gameplay? We know that they will most visually gorgeous but do we know how it plays out? What has ID delivered after Doom that has showned that they are capable of delivering great games? All Quake games has been pretty average in the single player aspect.

So DOOM 3 is definiatly not a lock.
Half Life 2 I do believe more in in term of gameplay but I guess it´s a question of which utilizes the physics engine better Half Life 2 or Far Cry.

In the fps area at least these 3 are the hottest contendants. Stalker I doubt we will see this year.

It´s a battle between Far Cry and Half Life 2 I think as of best fps of 2004

I seriously think you have to put UT2004 in there. Only confident Doom3 will come out this year out of the always mentioned.

I've really only played farcry demos but if the multiplayer isnt really fun I'm guessing it might not have the replay value. But what do I know. I think most will agree it's far from being a lock. Even if it means the game is just under appreciated, it just doesnt have the hype.

Dont get me wrong. It's a real beauty. I ordered a gig of ram partly because I see games like this as the future and it did seem to bring my system to its knees.

farcry has great graphics but the feel isnt there. The game is hard to take seriously with the enemies yelling "im gonna get you!" "im gonna kick your butt!" give me a break..

the realism and feel are big for me. 1942 and vietnam have feel, i just cant take this game seriously

Yeah thought I was the only one that didnt really care much for Far Cry. I think it will be a battle between DOOMIII and HL2 if thay actually show up but I wont count out S.T.A.L.K.E.R and COD's expansion if it shows up this year.

UT2004's gfx are way overrated.

Sure the game is great, but the gfx won't 'wow' anyone.

the full Far Cry game blows the demos out of the water!

I wasn't impressed with the demos either but the full game simply KICKS ASS.

D3 and HL2 can not be counted into the mix for GOTY because there is no set release dates for either right now. For all we know it could be next year before they come out.

GOTY? Nope.

Kickass game? definately!

Graphics are top notch and gameplay is great but the whole story and interection with your environment should have been more like Half-Life or Deus Ex(the first ofcourse). More story and more characters in the game that aren't clearly friend of foe or just some you don't shoot at would be nice. I am almost done with Farcry I think. Really stuck in a jam with what appears to be a "boss".

I really like it but I think the single player experience could have been a little more in depth. Its not as bad as serious sam but the level of the story and such doesn't match the amazing level of the graphics as it could. But then I haven't quite finished the game yet.

I'm at the part where i blow up 3 towers, how much futher do i have? :D

Aside from the graphics I really wasnt too impressed with far cry. It was the hardest game I have ever played though, even in normal (second diff box) some parts seemed almost impossible.

not sure, IIRC I am like 2 levels or so ahead of you. If its the same towers, you blow up a lot of shit in this game.

I was getting to that, but didn't want to just up and say it ;) . I am looking forward to them both but there is no way you can say either is going to take GOTY at this point.

Seeing your high expectations I aspect you being the first to trash Half Life 2 and Doom 3 when it don´t live up to it :D

Nothing can kill a game like hype good or bad. Not in term of sales of course but in the way we view them. I try to go in with the attitude that this will suck and then be pleasently surprised :D

FC just seemed like SOF2 but with better GFX.
UT2k4 on the other hand is one hell of a game.

D3/HL2? HL2 will be there if it comes out, the same goes for D3. As far as gameplay goes, I see HL2 having a better story and better gameplay. D3 just seems like an experience while HL2 is an epic game.

those are some pretty high expectations for a game they have been working on for so long yet have so little to show for it. HL was great but that doesn't mean HL2 will be.

By the time Doom 3 and Half Life 2 arrives everybody will have already played them in their minds so they will sell like dog shit ;)

I think it is between Far Cry, Doom 3, Half Life 2, UT2004, Vietnam, and Splinter Cell 2... All awesome games!

Can't we wait for the games to go on sale before we call them great?

We don't know that Doom3 HL2 or Splinter Cell 2 are great yet. We only have sreenshots and the beginings of rumors to go on.

Its only March, I'm sure we'll see some more great games this year. As for now, go play them, wait till December to start trying to figure the GOTY. After all Duke Nukem Forever could ship. (Bwahahaha!)

From the screen shots, movies, and the alpha, I think I have a good idea. HL2 is going to be story driven, and it looks like it will be damn interesting. D3 on the, on the other hand, looks like it's going to be, "Uhho, I'm going down the hallway! I hope there aren't any monsters by that leaky pipe...AYIEEE! A zombie monster guy!" Doom was never really story driven, it was all about mindless killing. Fun, possibly, but the story and theatric elements of HL2 will make it a lot more interesting.

DOOM was also released in 1993. HL in 1998. Would you like to continue comparing apples and oranges?

D3 will have a story, they hired a hollywood scribe for it.
