F@H Client Do's and Don'ts
The console is not an installer, but the actual Folding@Home client executable. In general, just download it, run it, and don't worry about it. However, if you like to be "hands on" with F@H, please keep in mind:

Each different running copy of F@H has to have its own Machine ID number. If you download each copy of F@H from the web site and configure fresh, there will be no problems.
Please don't manually retry to send WUs soon after a netsend failure. The netsend failure means that the server was probably overloaded and retrying will just make things worse.
Do not run multiple copies of FAH from the same directory
We have seen some issues with running the Windows console client with the service option and the Windows GUI version simultaneously. While we debug this, we recommend not combining these two options simultaneously.

Console Client Configuration Options

-config
Allows users to change their configuration information. This includes user & team names (reflected in the stats), whether or not to ask before a network connection is made to fetch/send work, set up proxy servers, preferred work unit type (Folding/Genome), process priority, CPU usage requested (5-100%), whether or not to use assembly loops, whether or not to use deadline information, and Machine ID changes.

-configonly
Same as above, but quit following configuration instead of beginning work.

-delete x
Delete item #x from work queue. This option should only be used if there is a serious error with the current unit that the client does not automatically recover from (e.g. crash-inducing). This should not normally happen, and if it does, we would be grateful if you could send us the FAHlog.txt file from the unit that causes the error.

-license
Displays the end-user license agreement

-queueinfo
Get information on queued work units. Includes for each unit the status (READY/FINISHED/EMPTY), unit type (Folding/Genome), originating server, and date when the unit was received (local time in GMT), as well as deadline if the server sent that information.

-send x
Send result #x back to server. Exits after trying to send unit (successfully or unsuccessfully). Use "-send all" to send all results outstanding. If unit x is not a completed work unit then the client exits without doing anything.

-verbosity x
Sets the output level, from 1 to 9 (max). The default is 3. This option should be used if the user wishes to see more detailed client output, particularly useful if there is a problem which needs to be reported to the F@H client development team.

-oneunit
Instruct the client to quit following the completion of one work unit.

-forceasm
Instruct the core to use SSE/3DNow assembly instructions if possible, even if it has previously made the determination that the machine may not be handling this well.

-advmethods
Request to be assigned work units from new projects, before they are broadly released to the rest of Folding@home. As among the first to try out new advanced simulations, you may wish to post any observations (positive or negative), questions, or issues at the user Forum.

-local
Use configuration files from local directory. This option has no meaning on Linux, but is vital on Windows and Macintosh for running multiple clients on a machine. It instructs the client to read its config information from the client.cfg file in the current directory rather than, on Windows, from the installation directory specified in the registry, or, on Macintosh, the Library/Folding@home directory. Information such as the user name, team name, proxy information, machine ID are maintained in the client.cfg file. The flag ensures that work does not conflict. Use "-local" only if you are planning on running more than one instance of Folding@Home on the same machine (this is only useful if you are running on a multi-processor machine). Create as many directories as there are processors on the machine, copy the exe files and client.cfg file into each of these directories, run "FAH3Console -local -config" on each and specify unique machine IDs for each directory (under the Advanced Settings option). From then onwards you may run each copy by switching to its directory and running with the -local flag.

-help
Print out the command line flags available and then exit.

Linux Specific

-freeBSD
For use by those wishing to use the Linux client on a machine running FreeBSD. See our FAQ for details on how to do this, but with this flag, all Cores downloaded will automatically be branded as being a Linux executable.

Windows Specific
The below options are accepted but ignored by the clients for operating systems other than Microsoft Windows.

-pause
Pause after finishing and trying to send current unit. Allows a user to shut down after finishing a unit, by pressing Ctrl-C, without then getting new work to process. This is recommended if you are planning on shutting down your machine for a long time (e.g. for a vacation), or are planning to un/re-install F@H after finishing the currently processing work unit.

-service
Run in service mode (for programs such as firedaemon). This prevents the client from exiting when it detects the current user is logging out. If this option is used when the client is not run as a service then it will run normally, but will not shut down automatically if the user logs out, and a "Wait for program to close." dialog box will be displayed.

"PherretBoxen": Revised Preferred mode of clothing naked boxen utilizing any spare electronic appliance/AVGear ( i.e. VCR) in the Relic [H]ousehold, usually created by the [H]ardBard's Spawn.

Older terms not used much any more:
"Hobbit" is the original term used for a computer put together to run folding from spare parts.
"Gnobbit" is the same as Hobbit, but was for running Genome.

PM me any others and I will add them so we don't clutter up this FAQ thread.

Do's:

Borg your family's PC's w/permission from mom and dad
Borg you friends PC's w/permission
Borg work/school PC's w/permission from school administration or your job's IT department.

See a pattern here? :p

Don'ts

Never ever illegally borg a PC with out asking.
Don't borg display PC's in retail stores. Also illegal.
Never give the [H] a bad name by acting stupid and borging a machine that you have no right touching.

Remember! You can lose your posting privledges here for posting about illegal borging acts and Stanford can remove your points and the TEAMS if they find that you have participated in illegal activity.

If you ever have a question about the legallity of borging a machine, ask one of the mods and please consider the EULA from Stanford:

Stanford benchmarks all the protiens on a 2.8Ghz Intel P4 running Linux at 110 Points per Day.
This works out at 1.63 Points per Hour per Ghz.

Now to work out if your folding at the correct speed you need to work out how fast in mins your boxen should finish a frame.
Either get the number of the protien from your monitoring program, EMIII, etc, or from you FAHlog.txt file.
Now look it up Here.
You want to record:- Preferred Time, Credit (Points value of protien), Number of Frames, Code (type of protien).

Now divide Points by Time.
A Tinker will run fast on an AMD boxen so multiply the answer by two.
If the answer is approx 5 then you have a small protien and the Convertion Factor is 1.6.
If the answer is around 10 then you have a big protien and the Convertion Factor is 3.2.

Now work out your Working Ghz.
If your running a single copy of FAH then just use your Ghz.
Otherwise if your running two copies of FAH on a hyperthreaded P4 the multiply your Ghz by 0.575.
Then if you've slowed FAH down by limiting the cycles it can use then multi the above result by the fraction you've slowed it down.

Now Total Time a workunit should take you = Points divided by Convertion Factor divided by Working Ghz.
Then Total Time divided by Number of Frames divided by 60 equals Frame time in mins.
Check this against your own times.

If your running faster Good. Some protiens will fold around 50% faster.
If your folding a lot slower then either something is stealing your cycles or the extra boost is switch off.

My Covertion Factors from my AMD farm running Windozes are.............

Small Gromacs:- 1.6 - 2.2 PpHpG
Big Gromacs:- 3.2 - 4.0 PpHpG
Timeless Tinkers:- 2.4 - 2.5 PpHpG.
Normal Tinkers:- 3.2 - 3.6 PpHpG.
Ambers:- 1.6 - 2.0 PpHpG
DGromacs:- 2.3 - 2.5 PpHpG.

Dont have any Intel boxen so dont know how well they fold.
Macs tend to fold slow but the odd protien will fold fast.
Tinkers are running 100% faster than on an Intel.
My Opterons will fold 15% faster than my Athlons.
FAH speed is based mainly on pure CPU Ghz so CPU cache, FSB speed dont make a lot of difference as long as the CPU's stay the same.

Note. the steps shown in the FAHlog.txt file are the number of iterations the protien must go through to be fully fold by FAH, The Frames are the major save points.

Luck........... :D

How to get your [H]'s (aka how to get your [H]ard|Forum Folding Badge)

1. Go to http://www.hardfolding.com

2. Under the "Member Info" menu

- Click "Folding@Home Stats" or "United Devices Stats"
3. Scroll down until you see "Find Member" and a search box

4. Input your personal folding name in the box and click "Submit" (as of yet this search feature is not on the UD page, so scroll through to find your name)

6. Click on your name once it comes up
a. It should be the first name that pops up on the list
b. If your name is not there:
i. Make sure you have finished a WU
ii. Check to see if you typed your folding name right
(both in the console and in the search)
iii. Check to make sure you are folding for team 33 ([H]ard|OCP)
7. Scroll down to the bottom of the page.

8. Now look for the very last line that starts with "javascript:" and ends with "halt;"

For Internet Explorer (IE)

9. Highlight the entire line and copy (Ctrl-C or right-click "Copy")
Such as:
Code:
"javascript:document.vbform.message.value=document.vbform.message.value +
' |URL=http://www.hardfolding.com?go=38&id=285]
|IMG]http://www.hardfolding.com/ftag1.php/mem/285.png[/IMG][/URL]'; document.vbform.submit(); halt;"

10. Click on:
-Favorites
-Add to Favorites...
-Rename "[H]ardfolding.com - [H]ome of the [H]orde" to "[H]" (its what I do..)
-You can select "Links" for the folder to save it to
-This saves it to your "Favorites/Bookmarks" that are seen from your main window
-If you cannot see it:
-Click on "View"
-Toolbars
-Then make sure "Links" has a Check-Mark next to it
-THEN go to the Bookmark you just made; [H]:
-Right click, select Properties
-Delete anything thats in the "URL:" Line
-PASTE the code you copied earlier from hardfolding.com stats page
-Click "ok"
-A popup will say: "The protocol "javascript" does not have a registered program. Do you want to keep this target anyway?
-Click "Yes"

For FireFox

9. Highlight the entire line and copy (Ctrl-C or right-click "Copy")
Such as:
Code:
"javascript:document.vbform.message.value=document.vbform.message.value +
' |URL=http://www.hardfolding.com?go=38&id=285]
|IMG]http://www.hardfolding.com/ftag1.php/mem/285.png[/IMG][/URL]'; document.vbform.submit(); halt;"

10. Click and HOLD the highlighted text, then "Drag" it to your Bookmarks(Links) bar.

11. There should now be a bookmark that says "javascript:document..."
-Right click, select Properties
-Rename the "Name" field to: [H] (or any other title you want to give it)

OR..

-Right Click on your Bookmarks menu
-Click on "New Bookmark..."
-Set Name: [H] (or whatever..)
-Paste entire code from hardfolding.com into the "URL" field
-Then Click "Ok"

For all the Mac folders out there, you can also add your quick submit/badge button to Safari (Thanks to p[H]ant0m for this info!)

1. Copy badge code from the bottom of your userpage at hardfolding.com

2. Go to Bookmarks -> Show All Bookmarks

3. Bookmarks -> Add Bookmark

4. Choose name and location (Bookmarks Bar if you'd like to have a quick submit button)

5. Edit the address of the newly created bookmark, and paste the code of the badge over whatever data was currently in the link.

6. Spread your badge liberally throughout the forums so that the word of the [H]orde is known far and wide.

-*- Advance Trix -*-

Ok. So you want a Fancy badge too huh?
Lets break the code down to the parts we need to see, the way I do it is to Cut/Paste into a txt document (notepad on Windows machines). After you past it, lets break it down like so (I changed the [ ] to { } only so it doesnt mess up the demo...) (another thing I will let you play with is adding /n into the code to get a new line after your last bit of writing before the badge shows up... can YOU do it?)

(this first part we dont need just hit "Enter/Return" after the ' )
javascript:document.vbform.message.value=document.vbform.message.value + '

(URL to go to, default is your stats page on www.hardfolding.com)
{URL=http://www.hardfolding.com?go=38&id=285}

(img to be displayed, this is your badge this is the only graphic you can use in here, for the badges had to be approved by KYLE to use... Do NOT get us banned from using them for being a jerk )
{IMG}http://www.hardfolding.com/ftag1.php/mem/285.png{/IMG}
{/URL}

(thisis the last part, make sure all the other changes inside come before the ')
';document.vbform.submit(); halt;

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Now that we see how the code is broken up, we can play with it.

javascript:document.vbform.message.value=document.vbform.message.value + '

(Folding@Home Forum Badge)
{URL=http://www.hardfolding.com?go=38&id=285}
{IMG}http://www.hardfolding.com/ftag1.php/mem/285.png{/IMG}
{/URL}

(UD Forum Badge - NOTE: Since we already have the javascript part, you will only need the first line of code to copy with the URL and the IMG){URL=http://www.hardfolding.com?go=36&id=1287}
{IMG}http://www.hardfolding.com/utag.php/mem/1287.png{/IMG}{/URL}

';document.vbform.submit(); halt;

NEXT... we put it all back together
(When you do this you will not need to change the [ ] brackets to { }, Just remeber that!)

javascript:document.vbform.message.value=document.vbform.message.value + '{URL=http://www.hardfolding.com?go=38&id=285}{IMG}http://www.hardfolding.com/ftag1.php/mem/285.png{/IMG}{/URL}{URL=http://www.hardfolding.com?go=36&id=1287}{IMG}http://www.hardfolding.com/utag.php/mem/1287.png{/IMG}{/URL}';document.vbform.submit(); halt;

To make this work, you MUST delete all the spaces that you made to seperate out the code (if you do seperate it out) to make this work as a one-click submit.

The final result should be similar to:

(yes I need more UD points ;) )

Remember these are meant as a perk for the [H]orde only. No additional information or images is inteneded to be used for these, badges and folding/UD stuff only. It's a perk of being in the [H]orde that the high and mighty let us enjoy!

TroubleShooting:
1.The WYSIWYG editor doesn't like to work with these snippets of code, you need to use the Standard post interface which can be found in your user control panel under options all the way at the bottom of the page.
