Fans Won't Turn Off?

This seems like the only forum that makes sense for this, since it seems like a power issue.

I've got a computer that doesn't seem to quite turn off. After shut down or hitting the power button, the computer does seem to power down.. except that the case and CPU fans keep going. Also, the power light does go off, but the HD light stays on solid.

Would anyone have an idea what could be going on?

Do you have a powered USB hub plugged in? I had a cheap powered hub that for some reason, after everything was powered off, would keep all the fans in the case spinning and lit up.

Are you sure it is not just going into sleep? which windows do you have?

This is XP, it's probably not going to sleep because I do explicitly choose Shut Down.

I'll look into that USB hub thing, but I doubt we have one there.

Interesting. A wild guess here: maybe theres something shorted somewhere?

When did that happen/started to happen? Is it a new build or an older one? Is your case clean inside?

Ah, and, does the HD spin? Maybe there's a failure within the drive that keeps the system powered on.

Little tip here: I'd start backing up your stuff :p Run a S.M.A.R.T. monitor to check drives consistency. If that's ok then try GRC's Spinrite to check the surface.

Maybe the power supply is failing and sends current when it's told to actually power down?

Run the MemTest98+ to make sure your ram is ok.

Just my 7 cents. Good luck.

Is this a new system or are there any new components in it? Or did this happen out of the blue?

This.

I could see an incorrect pin wiring on the MOBO if it's new or a bad mobo being the problem here if not.

This computer is pretty old, built when the 8600 was around $200. This just started a couple days ago.

This isn't my computer, so I won't have the best information. But the owner hasn't done anything special with it lately.

I had the same thing happen to a spare computer of mine when I had the Windows 7 beta installed on it. Case fans and CPU fan ran even though it appeared to be off. Turns out it was some sort of media sharing setting or something like that.
