Fans meant for horizontal position

I remember someone saying that normal fans aren't meant for laying horizontal and die very quickly. What type of fan is used for this purpose? I have 2 fans on the top of my case I might want to replace.

It's not "normal" fans, it has to do with the bearing type, sleeve bearings are the ones you want to avoid when mounting in horizontal positions. There are pretty much only two real common bearing types being used right now (other than sleeve), those being ball bearing and FDB bearings, you also have a few variants like the FDB such as the Hydro Wave by Panaflo and Sintec by EBM. My choices would be the S-Flex or Gentle Typhoon fans.

Edit: Crap, newegg has only 1 crappy 140mm ball bearing fan.
 
Most cases that use 140mm fans also have mounts for 120mm fans.
 
Hmm, Gentle typhoons? Are these new? Anyone compare them to slipstreams and S-Flex?

Then you are just SOL without making some custom mounts for the 120mm fans, as you will be hard pressed to find good quality 140mm fans (that are in the same class as the S-Flex). 140mm fans are just not that popular yet. The way to fans mount of that case I don't see you being able to use a normal adapter, not like I have seen a 120 to 140mm adapter anyway, but I'm sure you can rig something up.

The GT fans are the newest fans from them, they are a bit pricey, more so than the S-Flex, however the reviews I have seem them in they do better than the S-Flex in both free air and on HS's or rads. I have also heard them and they do seem smoother in sound than the S-Flex which kind of shocked me being that they are BB. I will say they are next on my list for fans to try out.
 
Do you think the Lian Li fans already on it are BB fans? I'm fine with not replacing them considering good companies don't make 140mm fans yet.
 
Look on the back of the fan for the model number, most of the time a quick search in Google will let you know, or you can contact the mfg. However, fans don't HAVE to be BB or anything, sleeve bearings will work, it's just that they tend to wear out faster, say 1 or 2 years rather than 3-5, some can't take it at all and can die within a month or so, but I have run some cheap fans (with sleeve bearings) like that for years without trouble. So, with that said, if they are working for you, keeping your case cool enough without being to loud for you, then why bother?
