I just saw newegg now sells qx6700 as oems so that means no fan and heatsink

cost 60 dollar cheaper.

I am wondering is there a better fan / heatsink i could get ?

if so which one?

Depends on your budget. There are many heatsinks that are far better than the Intel stock one.

Well... if you want to spend all 60 back into a fan/heatsink.. then there is always the Tuniq Tower.. or Scythe Infinity.. or other choices.

The Freezer Pro is always a good budget choice for 20-30 dollars. If you want a pretty heatsink then I guess the sexiest out there (imho) although, not the best performing is the Zalman CP9700.

If you want great performance and still be quiet, then I believe the tuniq tower is the best choice.. if you can find one. Otherwise the Scythe Infinity is next best.

how about the ninja?

another forum said that one was the best.

the sythe infinaty is close to the same thing, same manufacture, i believe the infinaty is the newer of the 2

everyone agrees Tuniq Tower is the best one?

if so i am going to get that one.

oh ya does that heat sink fit into the p180 case i am getting too :)

The P180 is a very roomy case. I'm sure it will be fine.

If I were you, I'd worry more about your PSU cables being long enough.

I'm using a Zalman CNPS9500 with my QX6700 in a Lian Li PC-7 Plus II case. At default speed (2.66GHz) under load I've seen it hit 48' C. Overclocked to 3.41GHz under load I've hit 60' C.

Ahum!

Under load with a zalman 60°C clocked at 3.41GHz?
What did u use as monitor software?
What did u use to load the cpu?

Can you redo the test with using core-temp and Prime 95 with the test: small FFT's?
Please take a screen shot with the two things running. I'm a bit to amased for believing those numbers.

You might want to retest for yourself also, because maybe at this time you are killing the cpu. I'm running also a quad with the zalman. But even if it's not mounted properly, My temps are much higher. I even don't think about overclocking at this time.

You might want to consider the Scythe Infinity over the Tuniq Tower, since a second fan can be added to it to assist cooling. In fact, 4 fans can be used with the Infinity, but that's overkill.

FWIW, I recently installed a Tuniq Tower along with an E6600. I've got the chip overclocked to 3.2GHZ and I see 31-33c at idle and 37-41c at full load. (the variance is due to ambient temps) And that's with the fan running at roughly 1500rpm... virtually silent!

Even so, my case ventilation needs work, as case temps are generally several degrees warmed than the CPU temps. The tuniq tower is a remarkably good performer. The adjustable RPM knob that comes with it is great, too. :)

Wow, I was just about to post almost the same exact thing as you infocalypse. I have the same setup and almost the same temps My idle is a little lower and load a couple degrees higher than yours though.(see sig). I use OCCT for my full load temps. Also, I'm using the stock tuniq thermal grease too.:) The tuniq tower is the best air cooler I've ever used.

Nice! :) I used AS5 when I installed my tuniq tower. I've got it mounted in my TJ-07, which has two 80mm fans blowing outside air directly at the tower and two 120mm fans sucking air away from it. I still giggle when I look in the case, the tuniq is just freaking huge.

Sadly, while the TJ-07 provides awesome cooling for the CPU and drives, it does little for general airflow throughout the case for the gfx card and chipset. I'm going to try and solve that problem by installing a Scythe Kama bay cooler in the front, since I have billions of 5.25" slots to spare. ;)

What kinda case are you using?

Its in my sig but I'll tell ya anyway.:p I've got a kandalf with 2 120mm intake fans in the front and a 120x35mm exhaust fan and I modded a hole in the side window for a 120x35mm fan to blow right on my graphics card.

Sorry for the hijack, but how do you like your Kandalf case? Is the build quality okay and does it get dusty?

I love my kandalf, best case Ive ever owned. It gets minimal dust cuz of the top vents, but the foam filters in the front bays catch a ton of dust. I have to clean them out a least twice a week. Lots of room and great cooling. I have pics of mine here.
