Ive been reading around about these fanless psu's and decided to pick one up for cheap
($20). Its a COOLMAX CF-480 480W ATX "Fanless" Power Supply.

It is being used with:
PentiumD 2.8
1.5gb of ram.
Creative Soundblaster fatality edition.....the first one......
160gb Sata Maxtor
80gb Sata WD.
Sata DVDRW drive

I recently fell into a 8800 GTS BFG overclock card that requires a 6 pin adapter. Whats the chance that adding this will over work my PSU??? Nothing is overclocked. I like to leave everything stocked as I have kids to feed. Also, I'd like your thoughts on these Fanless suppliues

It's a $20 PSU. I don't even have to look it up to tell you that it's a piece of shit. Fanless PSUs can be good, but this one certainly isn't. Even if this PSU had a fan I wouldn't trust it to power a system with an 8800GTS, but without even a fan to cool off its components, I think it would be a very bad idea to use it.

The only fanless psu that's good is the Seasonic X-series. Not only is a fanless CoolMax junk, ALL COOLMAX ARE JUNK. Enjoy your dead computer if you don't change to a real power supply.

Very few decent fanless units on the market, the X-series seasonic being the most notable.

The coolmax isn't one of the few decent ones, lets put it that way. It's $20 and a case of you get what you pay for.

I can't hear the fan on my PSU. Because there are fans on the video cards and case fans, radiator fans that make more noise.

Fanless PSUs are a waste of time, unless your not going to have a passively cooled everything else, don't bother, it will make next to no difference and youll probably have a giant assed heatsink out the back of the case. Just get a quieter fan cooled PSU.

Whatever you do, don't stick the 8800GTS in there. I should be ok with the rig as it is though.

The 8800 wont go in for a while. This is really a test system. I just wanna see how the setup would preform under normal use. Also I've never heard of Seasonic. How long have they been around for?

Seasonic's been around since the 1975 and make PSU models under their own brand as well as models that get rebranded for more well-known companies like Corsair, PC Power and Cooling, Antec.

I'm using a X400 fanless in my sig setup and it runs quite cool. Here's silentpcreview's summary page on fanless units - I'd return yours or at least make sure that the case has some good airflow (which would negate the fanless nature of the PSU). http://www.silentpcreview.com/article1063-page9.html

There's really no point in buying a fanless PSU. There are plenty of dead silent PSUs out there with a dead silent fan, after all having a little air moving is much better than none at all.

This PSU is rated at 480W, and technically it can support a 8800GTS considering your setup. Your system won't draw more than 300W under normal gaming and conditions, however, depending on how hot that PSU gets, you might land in trouble. Might be a good idea to somehow attach a 120mm fan or something.

Also, another thing to take in account is how reliable that PSU is. You don't want it to fry the entire system, do you?

As others have said, the x-series is the way to go. Either X-series fanless, or a regular X-series which the fan isn't even on 90%+ of the time

I have the 400w x series, my hard drives make enough noise to warrant me returning it for a psu with a fan and save some money, it all depends on your setup.

I've just gone from a fanless PSU (that died) to an Ocz Stealthstream - I can't tell the difference (and I'm pretty anal about noise).

The loudest noise is the electronic buzz when I scroll the screen, even after changing the PSU and GPU, oh and Monitors???

It's only got 280W available on the 12V, so the other 200W have to come off the other rails. But in a modern system, those rails won't be loaded even in the remote vicinity of that capacity. So by modern standards it's not a 480W PSU. Maybe in an old system, but not a new one.
