Okay, I have a friend who lives two hours away from me. I built a computer for him and its worked great for nearly a year, but now he says one of his fans is making an annoying grinding, squealing type of noise. His case is the Antec SLK3700AMB Link and he is using the fan (back fan) and powersupply that came with it, plus another Antec 120mm fan (front fan) Link . His video card is a Gainward GeForceFX 5900 128MB Link and his motherboard is a MSI 865PE Neo2-FIS2R Link . His proc cooling is stock Intel heatsink/fan. He says it sounds like the bearings of a fan, which would probably mean a dying fan. It makes the sound only for about 15-30 minutes following reboot, and he seldom reboots. It made a soft, but high-pitched sound once that was irritating enough to wake him up. There was plenty of dust in the case when he opened the case up, but he cleaned it up. Here's what he found when he did some testing: the video card fan is making an unveven sound, and he thinks it is most likely the culprit, and the NB fan is definitely the loudest fan in the case. So, can you guys give me any tips or suggestions on nailing down the right fan or isolating the problem more so we can be sure that it is the video card fan or not? If it is the video card, what is the best course of action to take next? Is it a big problem, or just a nuisance? If you need any more information, just ask and I'll try and get to you.
 
I just built a new rig that's louder than I hoped. I was pretty sure it was the video card fan (evga 6800GT). The case was easy to open so I just listened. But what confirmed it for me was when I put it in "Standby" mode. Based on my motherboard setup for power configurations, only the video card turned off (the case fan stays on). So when I put it in standby mode, just the videocard fan stopped and it was MUCH quieter. Maybe this would work for you but it might not be an option depending on the motherboard and OS (mine is an Asus A8V and XP Pro).

If so, I'd pick up an NV silencer video card fan setup from arctic-cooling.com (or newEgg.com). They're much quieter, cooler, and only about $30.00.

i had the same problem with the videocard fan. it made a lot of noise....next thing you know, the fan isnt moving anymore..its probably the videocard fan.. change that or get one of those zalman heat pipe thingys that i have. soonner or later, the fan will stop and your videocard will be dead.
 
Don't forget to take a look at the North Bridge fan (on the motherboard). The one on my wife's i865 MoBo died....and wow did the machine get unstable......:eek:

If the North Bridge HSF is going south, I cannot recommend this one from Thermalright enough. I put them on the wife's i865 and on my new machine (sig). Great product - very high quality. Recommended.....:cool:
