Fan splitter voltage mod

Awhile ago I impulsively purchased this item (http://www.amazon.com/Phobya-4-Pin-3-Pin-Splitter-Connection/dp/B007S3T4O0) to aid fan cabling issues and for that it has worked great, I plug them in at one place and they work. But I never realized that there would be a lack of rpm control and it is really beginning to bug me. I know you can switch some molex wires to get a 7v mod which is what I would really like to do but I am no electrician so I want to be safe.
The setup would be this: PSU w/ modular molex cable -> fan splitter -> same molex cable -> d5 pump. I might be able to plug in a seperate psu molex cable for the pump if that is needed. And like I said, I am stupid with electricity so if it isn't possible just tell me :p Thanks in advance for any input!

P.S. I debated whether to place this here or in the Power Supply section, if I was wrong please move it

Use +12V (yellow) for positive and +5V (red) for ground.
ie black to fan goes to red from PSU
This will give you 7V.
I use this method for the fan on my water cooler radiator.

That sounds like exactly what I want but it is safe to directly modify the power supply cable? And do you know if that would affect the pump that is later on down the line?

Its perfectly safe as long as you modify the connector from the fan, not the one from the PSU.

if you plug anything onto the same power feed, 12V will now be 7V and there will be no 5V rail.
