I am working on a comp for a friend and Ive narrowed the problem down to either the mobo or the CPU. I have tried a different PSU, a different battery, a different video cars (it has onboard), and different DDR.

What happens is when I hit the power button, the CPU fan spins for a second and then cuts off and nothing else happens.

Specs:

Pentium 4 1.8GHz Socket 478
256MB No-name DDR
250W Power Win CPU
P4VMM2 Mobo

make sure the cpu fan is pluged into the cpu fan plug on the motherboard.

reseat your hsf

other than that, i dunno.

I had the same problem when using generic ram in a system. You said you tried different ram, so I dunno either. Got any more ram you can try?

Your mobo is probably getting grounded. Take your mobo out of the case, put it on the box it came in and plug everything that's crucial to start up and then start it.

I have tried all of these thing and I'm thinking maybe the CPU fan header is bad. The CPU has no physical burn marks...

I've fried CPUs before, and there were no burn marks.. so you can't rule out the CPU until you try it in a different (working) system and it works..

Thats the problem... I have no P4 parts (I'm an AMD guy). But I will order a mobo and if thats no the problem, I will atleast have a spare mobo to test systems in the future.

Maybe a local computer shop will let you test it on one of their boards??

^ 1st probability

^ 2nd probability the thermal cutout

3rd Probability, a bad Power Supply

what is it?, unhook everything not absolutely necessary and try for a beep
(CPU Heatsink Fan and speaker, dismounted from the mobo)

if its a flyweight generic power supply that came with a case
its likely the cause, and using it could potentially do more damage than good

Take the board out and make sure that there are no extra standoffs in the case. If there are, try removing them. If it still does it after removing extra standoffs, then the board is probably screwed.
